best exercise for pear shape?

Quote  |  Reply
i'm a pear shape ( i prefer to describe it that i look like an ancient fertility goddess :) ) and i have a question to all women who have found an effective exercise to get the weight off of the lower part of the body. i found that if i do leg exercise it only makes me look worse cause i bulk up and my tighs get really really huuuuge. another thing that i found is that massage is excellant for cellulite - got completely rid of it on my tighs and butt after one week of daily massage (1hr) (they opened a new massage salon here and it was for free :)). so how do you get your tighs smaller? cardio?

try long stretching yoga type or pilates type workouts to stretch, lengthen, tone and firm muscles without adding bulk
cardio and lots of it.
I have heard pilates and yoga also help shape the pears a little trimmer.  Nice to hear about the daily massage effects - nice!

PILATES! my thighs are my trouble spot and i used to do pilates but forgot about them for a long time... just started again a couple weeks ago and i already see the difference! i do winsor pilates buns and thighs workout (its only twenty minutes long and even shorter when you've done it long enough that you can do the exercises without the tape):

I totally agree, Pilates is an absolute winner and has become a bit of a lifestyle for me after being referred by my physio (I haven't needed to go back to the physio since!) U really do notice a change in your body shape pretty quickly, more lean and flexible and whilst it has the effect of toning your whole posture also improves making u appear slimmer and more confident. Its a tad expensive to go to classes but i'd really recommend it to begin with so that you truly know you are doing it right (and not causing yourself damage! - find a good studio no a dodgy cheapo gym session if you can) Once you have been going a while build up with 2/3 a week using a dvd to supplement the class.

Dry burshing is amazing for cellulite, make it part of your daily routine before getting in the shower.

After trying the Bums Legs & Tums workouts for a few months i have to agree it can have the effect of bulking them out if u already tend to store fat there like me, so now I try and do lots of cardio (can't avoid the fact fat burning is the best way to slimmer everything!) and conversely concentrate on toning my upper body so that I appear more in proportion.

If you come across any other ways please let me know. I am also have a 'Botacelli' shape as my mum likes to say :)

Everytime someone repeats the lie that pilates will make your muscles longer, or bumps a thread that has been dead for over 2 years, god kills a puppy.

The words "bulk" and "bulky" are used and abused on this forum.

You won't be able to spot reduce the lower part of your body.  Cardio and weight training with good nutrition will reduce your body fat.  I've heard good things about Pilates, but make sure you get your nutrition right, otherwise you won't get the results you desire.

Wow negativity! sorry if i'm not using the correct 'terms'... all i know is from my own personal experience, being classically female pear shaped when i spent a lot of time doing toning classes specifically for my thighs legs and bum, as my muscles became more developed they made my thighs look chunkier! Pilates may not literally make my musles 'longer', but practising it regularly unequivicollay does improve my body shape and make me appear leaner, even if its a trick of the eye down to posture (although I have noticed real changes in my body shape especially my stomach) Why be a hater i'm just trying to share my own positive experiences?

No, when people say 'light weights make you toned, and heavy weights make you bulky' he kills a kitten.

Hater?  There's no hate in my post, sorry if it sounded that way .

If you want to tone down you have to concentrate on fat loss.  You have to change your body composition in order to alter your bodyshape.  Toning classes that attempt to spot reduce areas of the body aren't very good for dropping body fat.  You need an exercise routine that will hit the whole body.

i put some muscle on my shoulders to help offset the pair-ness. they are actually one or two inches wider than my hips which helps. my boobs are not big enough to give me that hourglass shape tho, sigh! they used to be a decent size, but then my hips were bigger too. you can only use and accent what you got.

i know you say your thighs are big but are you happy with the overall shape of them? like would you mind if they stayed the same shape but were just smaller? if so that's easier to do. me, my thighs need help reshaping, so my just making them smaller won't do, which is kind of frustrating cuz it would be much easier.

I totally agree littlesimonegeorge thats why I run regularly on top! I just wanted to try something different and also do some strength training to improve my performance, which it did, just a shame I didn't like the aesthetic results! How to combat a pearhsaped figure is a tough subject, and an enduring one hence why it gets bumped up even though its an old subject I guess! That was literally my first post on this forum so go easy on me.

 I hear that J3ssm3ss.

Is your pear shape due to your skeletal frame?

I'm know expert, but the reason why I ask is because my girlfriend has very wide hips (which I love lol), but it's due to her skeletal frame, she doesn't have any cellulite on her thighs or bottom.  This was due to her many years of high level swimming, she used to compete at a national level.

I wonder if smimming would help those who are pear shaped?
