My AST and ALT were slightly elevated in my most recent lab results.
Answer
ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase) are enzymes that leak into the bloodstream when liver cells are damaged. The liver can be damaged by diseases, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, as well as by certain drugs, like alcohol and by an exceptionally sugary and fatty diet. Liver conditions usually respond to a diet of nutritious foods with enough calories to maintain ideal weight and no more. If fatty liver is a problem, the best diet is one low in refined carbohydrates, saturated fat and alcohol, which emphasizes vegetables, complex carbohydrates, lean fish, poultry and meat, and fat from plant sources.
