Best full body workout
Hello,
I am looking for a good full body workout to complete three days a week. I'm 6' 7 and weigh 275lbs. I'm just looking to reduce my body fat and not lose muscle. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone...
Steve
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!
The New Rules of Lifting for Women is a 3x/week, full body workout. I'm not sure if the regular New Rules of Lifting (the one meant for men) is the same way, but it's working well for me.
It's funny you mentioned BJJ. I actually took a few classes when I lived in Santa Barbara. I worked at a bar there, O'malleys, and there was a bouncer there who competed so we all took classes with him.
Paragon or Rodrigo Clark? I love the BJJ, it's so much fun and it is never boring!
I had a lot of fun doing it as well. I like your journal by the way, keep up the posts...
Thanks...I went back and deleted some of those that I really don't want popping up again with TMI, so there are gaps.
ditto on the Brazian jiu jitsu! If you're not big on grappling though, kick boxing is good, too.
Kickboxing is a great workout. I am trying to avoid anything to high impact due to a back injury I suffered a year ago. I'm trying to get back into shape to regain all the strength I lost from the injury.
Les Mills Body Pump is a great workout. It mixes cardio with weights and the entire body is worked out in each class. The first class kicked my butt. I was so sore I could barely move, but I went for the next class and worked out the soreness. I've been doing this for two weeks now and love it.
Olympic Weight Lifting is a great full body exercise.
I too have had a bad back, but weightlifting has helped my overall body even my back. My husband and I joined a small gym in our area about three years ago and learned the lifts from two USAW trained Coaches. Freddie and Niki Myles at Mylesahead fitness.com. There are many clubs across the country with certified USAW trained coaches. I have found a great community of supportive people who are excited about strength training and life long fitness. Plus once you have learned the lifts you can compete in one of the many meets held around the country.
Here is the USA Weight Lifting website.

Check out the USA website. On the home page they have videos of a meet "The Golden West Open" held at FIT BARBELL in Los Altos CA. the first person in the video is one of the members from our gym John Logan Coots who also is a personal trainer at another gym.
I can't believe no one has said this already- running!!
It can get a little boring, but if you're the type that needs structure to stick to, running is great. Mostly it takes from you center, but you pump your shoulders/arms and obviously your legs get it too. The cardio factor burns away fat and the strength factor helps build muscle.
Good luck to you :)
and of course, I can't believe no one said "swimming" -- no impact, great allover body exercise. With interval training and proper eating, you can do a great job at reducing overall body fat

maybe because running is seriously lacking in the 'total body' part
Lifting and HIIT (sprinting)
i swim competitively and it is a really good full body workout, you use tons of muscles. just swimming straight laps will get boring probably, so you could try looking up some workouts online which will make the workout a little more interesting and it will mix it up. goodluck!

What muscles do you not use when running? Oh yeah.. your nose muscles! Whoops.

Clearly, you do not live in a cold enough climate. ;-) My nose runs faster than I do. I don't find myself using the muscles in my ears too much when I'm running.
I do wish running was better for your arms. I am incorporating weight training so that I can have better upper-body strength.
Thank you all for your thoughts, and advice on this topic. I am definitely going to try swimming and possibly yoga. I'd really like to try Birkram yoga.
My advice would be to mix it up. All these workouts are really awesome, but I find that running 2-3 times a week, lifting a couple times, and swimming a couple times gets me more fit than just doing one of the three. Pilates is also pretty awesome - it really helped my core area, which doesn't get as much of a workout when I run. Having a couple different things to do also helps with the boredom factor!

Can you name a muscle you don't use while tieing your shoes? Is tieing your shoes a 'full-body' workout?
What type of food should not be eaten?
