What are the best Halloween candies?
Asked by tanggeriine on Oct 03, 2009 in Nutrition

Halloween is coming up, and although candy is not good for you, it's hard to resist. Out of all of the unhealthy candies, which would you suggest I eat if I were to have some?

Answer

"Best" is an abstract and complicated concept.  Does it mean "healthy" as in free of fat, trans fat and sugar, or is it "natural" as in free of synthetic colors, flavors, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners, or is it "enhanced" with heart-healthy antioxidants, omega-3s and vitamin C, or is it "ecofriendly" with organic ingredients and a small carbon footprint?  But in terms of being low in calories and trans fat free, the best candies are simple sugar creations like lollipops and hard candies (or gummy bears and licorice, although those stick to your teeth.)  I think the best Halloween candies are those you buy at the last minute and are not your favorite so as not to tempt.  Conversely, you can chose your favorite but limit snacking to Halloween night.
