What is the best kind of food to eat before exercise?

Should I eat carbs or protein before exercise?  And how long before exercising should I eat?


Answer

If you exercise later in the day, plan to eat a small to moderately-sized balanced meal with complex carbohydrates 2 to 4 hours before you exercise, and then about 30 minutes before you start, eat an easily-digested high carbohydrate snack. The snack could be a sports drink, juice or low fat milk.  The meal could be anything from a sandwich, to leftovers, to granola, yogurt and fruit, etc.  If you exercise upon arising, skip the meal and move on to the high carbohydrate snack.  Drink lots of water too.  After exercise, eat a meal with protein and carbohydrate as soon as possible.  Read about eating for exercise at About.com.
