Best Music For Running

Quote  |  Reply

So here's a few songs I've got in my ipod right now that I run to. What are you guys listening to?

Mausam & Escape by AR Rahman - from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack - may be the best running song ever made.

The following songs by The Crystal Method are all excellent for running:

Busy Child, Trip Like I Do, Name of the Game, Tough Guy, Roll it Up

Just Dance by Lady Gaga (don't judge me)

Great thread! I'm such a music geek. I have so many running playlists! I tend to like artists like Sleater-Kinney and Stellastar (which most people haven't heard of) but they have a great beat for running. I also like to mix it up a lot to keep it interesting, a fast Ella Fitzgerald big band piece with Eminem's 8 mile, then Rob Zombie, White Stripers, The Killers, Patsy Cline, U2's Beautiful Day, Cake, Bikini Kill, NOFX, System of a Down, Yeah yeah yeahs, Queen... etc. I think keeping it interesting keeps me going. If it's all techno or all rock I am afraid I'd get bored. I have probably 11 or 12 playlists that are 40-50 minutes long (If anyone is really interested I can post them - many of them have "walk breaks" worked into them too from when I was learning to run).

However, I think the two albums I got that I use the most are System of a Down's Hypnotize/Mezmerize and Stellastar's title CD. Almost every song on there is a great pace! And the Matrix soundtrack isn't too shabby either (Rammstein is on there)!

Legendary - especially aggree with sleater kinney - also nice to feel like your a kick ass girl when running!

Northern Soul and motown!!! upbeat/happy/motivating!

Jamie Lidell too!

Rev Theory - Hell Yeah (new fav)
Three Days Grace - The Animal I Have Become
Shinedown - Devour
Ladies and Gentlemen - Saliva

I have a ton more on my iPod at home... i'll get back to you later.

my songs are a little different I guess ...

By Nickelback: Next Contestant, Figured You Out, How You Remind Me, Photograph

David Ball (country): Riding with Private Malone, Amigo

Aaron Tippin: There Ain't Nothin' Wrong with the Radio

Pam Tillis: Mi Vida Loca

3 Doors Down: Kryptonite

Rage Against: Prayer of the Refugee

I average an 8:30 mile.

Thanks for all the ideas guys! I run long distances so my playlists are always running out before I finish. I need more music! I like techno, but only techno with singing in it. For some reason I need occasional singing in my music.

My recommendation is...

CASSIUSPLAY - this is part of the Nike+ Original Run thing. It's a 46 minute track composed just for runners. It's good. I listened to it for about a week then got bored. I use it every once in awhile. I love how the beats and singing changes frequently throughout the track.

Oh, and I'm also a closet Lady GaGa fan. My girlfriend laughs at me when I listen to Starstruck (by the way, Starstruck has got to be the best running song second to Just Dance.)

Electric Six - crazy enough to make me run sometimes ;)

Hey mds86 -if you like techno with singing you should check out Dune, they have some great fun songs and it's singing and a fast techno beat.

this is a great thread! im not a runner (yet! i would love to be someday in the future! just too fat right now!) but i love to listen to my mp3 player while doing my workout dvds! these are some great suggetions!

i don't know how much the guys would like this but for the girls.....anything Pink puts out is always good workout music!

Yeah working my way up to running was sort of a rite of passage for me too. I had to lose over fifty pounds before I started. It feels really good to get to where you can actually run. Keep at it. You'll get there! And um, I do indeed listen to Pink (on and off the treadmill).

GREAT POST IDEA! I've been wondering what some good songs were but didn't think to post it!!

I'm going to mooch ideas off of everyone's posts!

BTW, my favorite is I Devise My Own Demise by Papa Roach

Alright everyone listen up cuz the following stuff is PERFECT:

Christiansands by Tricky

Body Moving by Beastie Boys (Fatboy Slim Remix)

Pretty much anything from the White Zombie remix album: Supersexy Swinging Sounds - especially Electric Head pt1 & 2 - part 2 is my new fav.

Hella Good by No Doubt

Adriana by Headstrong - a one hit wonder from like 97 or something. Excellent though.

i LOVE running to the Mama Mia soundtrack, but it gets a little old after awhile. Gwen Stefani also puts a cool beat in, and so does misst elliots 'lose control'

Black Devil Car - Jamiroquai  *****VERY FAVORITE RUNNING TUNE****

Shut up and drive - Rihanna

Radar Love - Golden Earing

Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran  ***Imagine you're in the video...****

Thunder - Prince

Maneater - Nelly Furtado

Headstrong- Trapt

Poker Face- Lady Gaga

Just Dance- Lady Gaga

Disturbia- Rhianna

Candle (Sick and Tired)- The White Tie Affair

Shake It- Metro Station

Weekend Warriors- A Change of Pace

Everything is Alright- Motion City Soundtrack (not a soundtrack, just the name of the band)

Gives You Hell- All American Rejects

Circus- Britney Spears ( no judging me!!! shut up lol)

i love puppies. shut up. i might go running tonight. but its butt ass cold outside. so i will not be motivated...so i will probably chicken out.

I cycle through songs--listening to them constantly until I can't stand them anymore, but in general, for my money, the best running music is by a diva, anything from disco to Disturbia. I've gone through my ipod, and some of my favorites are:

Possibly my favorite now, "Lovefool" The Cardigans

Single Ladies is a great one.

Lots of Rihanna

"I Run for Life" Melissa Etheridge (for the running montage playing in my head...)

"You Think You're a Man" Full Frontal

Some French techno: Yelle, TTC

Some Madonna and just a little Cher--like someone else said, if you're wearing headphones, no one can hear you.

Everyone can hear what I've got on my headphones. I like my music on full blast. So, no Cher for me.

Dance music, Ministry of Sound <3

I have a playlist dedicated for working out. I love my tunes.

Off the top of my head...

  • Santogold: ENTIRE self-titled album is fabulous for working out.
  • Beck: E-Pro, Gamma Ray, Nausea, The Information
  • Paramore: Basically any song from Riot album
  • Modest Mouse: Fellow Washingtonians, so I just love them.
  • Muse: Knights of Cydonia, Supermassive Black Hole
  • Good Charlotte: couple tracks off their most recent album aren't bad
  • Angels and Airwaves
  • White Stripes
  • The Killers
  • Kings of Leon: Sex on Fire (makes a girl feel good!)
  • Hellogoodbye: Here in Your Arms
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Gold Lion and Phenomena are my favorites
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Rise Against
  • Rage Against The Machine
  • The Kooks
  • Radiohead

etc. etc. etc.

Music is freakin awesome.
