Best Option for lean protein

Quote  |  Reply

hi all,

id like to try and add lowfat lean healthy proteins into my diet.  right now, it consists mostly of veggies..although i will indulge in a little bit or cracker or chip here and there.

I love dairy, cheese and nuts but am trying to stay away from eating alot of these.  dairy because its higher in carbs, cheese because its higher in fat and calories and nuts because its hard for me to stop eating them and they are high in calories and fats.

so, id like to hear what all you out there do!  Thanks!

Fat is good for you an necessary for good nutrition.  Carbohydrates are good for you and necessary for good nutrition.  You say you eat mostly veggies, which are mainly carbs themselves, though, so I imagine you knew that, lol.

My favourite lean protein source is bean burritos, enriched spaghetti with marinara sauce, or most of these:

Skim milk, 90cal a cup,  8.5g protein. All sorts of beans.  Yogurt, but watch out for chemicals and all that weird stuff some companies put in it.  Eggs, 70cal for a large and 6g+ protein.

Broccoli, 30cal a cup and 2.5g protein; when cooked it's smaller, so you can eat enough to get a substantial amount of protein without feeling stuffed.  Kale, same as broccoli.  Dried Spirulina seaweed, 45cal a cup, 8.5g protein. Potatoes, 150 cal for a medium one with  4g+ protein.

Whole, regular oatmeal, ~4g protein per 100cal serving.   Special K, 120cal a cup, 7g protein.

And of course, numerous protein bars and powders. :]

Low sodium lowfat cottage cheese is extremely high in protein, but without most of the bad features of regular cheeses. Because it's so bland without the salt, it helps to top it with strong flavors - like salsa, grated mizithra, muffaleta or gardinara relish, what have you.

The other source of nearly pure protein is fish. A 6 oz can of water packed tuna is only 150 calories drained - broiled fresh white fish like cod and halibut are similar. As with the cottage cheese, top it with strong flavors.

CHICKEN!!!!! Extra lean ground beef for meatballs, meatloaf  and tacos....tuna.....eggs...cottage cheese.....I eat a ton of protein Laughing

I like a small seared tuna steak. A hot skillet and some cajun spices rubbed in, less than a tsp of olive oil and sear both sides until it is just done to your taste(I like my nearly as a sashimi.) Sliced into thin strips and garnished with dill and lemon juice. I also have drizzled a little soy sauce on the plate to enhance the flavors. AND ... you can serve it in strips on a salad and it is yummers that way too. Just about any serving combination is amazing and lots of protein with the right kinds of fats. A 3 ounce tuna steak has 25 grams of protein, 118 calories and scored an A- on the grade here.

My .02.
