Better to eat before or after?
I like to work out as soon as I get up in the morning on the stationary bike for 30min. I tend to not eat before I do because my stomach is pretty sensitive, if i even eat a peice of fruit before I get on I feel nauseous and cant complete my workout.
I eat right after though.
Is this ok? Is it healthier to eat before or after a workout or does it make no difference as long as you eat?
It depends really on the person. I tend to eat after I workout because eating before makes me nauseous, just like you. Some people eat only a small snack before workout to boost their energy which may be beneficial in the morning seeing as you need something to keep you going. Perhaps you can try eating something small and then waiting for about an hour or so until the food has digested. I doubt it makes a difference eating before or after a workout, it's really a matter of choice.
Hope this helps!
I think our body signals are the best to follow.... if you eat first and it makes you feel ill, eat afterwards. I understand that a 20 minute or so workout prior to eating is ok, but too much more might be harmful. I like to workout first thing also, but I eat and wait about 1 hour to start my workout since it will be at least a 1 hour workout.
Basically, do whatever allows you to get the most intense workout in; for me that's eating a little before, and that's usually what I recommend, so that you have energy easily availible, but if you have a really sensitive stomach and can't workout effectively with any food in your stomach, then go ahead an forgo eating until after exercise.

It depends...here is why...if you are trying to burn more fat etc then dont eat prior...
I like Alwyn Cosgrove's take on the 'fasted cardio' thing, from this article:
"Are you f***** kidding me? Seriously, are you f****** kidding me? Why are we even talking about this?
Let's take two twins, both 200lbs, both doing the same training program, taking the same supplements, and following the same nutrition plan in the hopes of getting lean.
One difference, though: one of them eats 2 eggs and does 30 minutes of cardio three days per week. The other does 30 minutes of cardio, three days per week and THEN eats 2 eggs.
So what's the magical difference in terms of fat loss after six months? Drum roll please...
I'll tell you — no f****** difference.
However, whenever you bring up this question we get a ton of responses saying, "This is exactly the information I needed!". Oh f*** off. The reason you are still fat is because you couldn't decide to do cardio on an empty stomach or not?
30 minutes of steady state cardio will burn about 300 calories. Three times per week – 900 calories. Add that up for 26 weeks and we get a whopping: 23,400 calories.
Or 6.6 lbs of fat.
In six months.
If doing it fasted, burned 30% more (which it doesn't), you're looking at another 2lbs of fat in that same six month period.
Or an additional 0.07 pounds per week.
And for those of you who say – I do fasted cardio but I have a small scoop of protein first, then you're NOT DOING IT FASTED THEN, ARE YOU?
Fat people finish marathons all the time. Aerobic training doesn't do a hell of a lot for real world fat loss. Even if you're hungry"
I like the fact that you actually listen to your body. I know a lot of people that force their-selves to eat something before a run and end up "tossing cookies" half way through. Your body will be burning more calories after a run than before. (Common Sense). I can not run on an empty stomach, so I eat a piece of bread with butter and honey. Afterwards I will eat my breakfast, but instead of having it all at once I will break up into two snacks. A smaller meal is easier to digest than a larger meal. You may want to increase your workout to 45-60 min. After 30 min your core is just getting warmed up enough to maximize burning calories. Advice is free and you get what you pay for so I think this is the point at where I'm just gonna shut-up. Good Luck. ![]()
Frankly, if you're doing ok, then it's ok. I sometimes go for a run in the morning, and I can't exercise with any food in my stomach, either. However, I've noticed that I can't run quite as long or well as I can in the middle of the day, not when I'm full but after I've had some nutrition in my body. If you're doing ok and you're not feeling lightheaded, then I really don't see what the problem is.
It's best to not eat 45 minutes before and 45 minutes after an intense workout. This allows the bodys metabolism to work on fat/calorie storage instead of glucose from food you just ate.
That's not a very good argument, when you do eat, instead of burning what you just ate, that food gets stored, usually as fat.
See sully's post above.

I will begin to try to bump it up. Only problem being, I like my sleep, and I dont often sleep well so getting up at 5:30 as opposed to 6 to get an extra half hour in is asking a hefty amount haha!
I try to work out on wii fit in the afternoon too and go for a walk (or break out the old razor scooter for nostalgia's sake) after dinner
Maybe Ill start upping my bike on weekends to start
For me I don't eat before exercise, I just take a lot of water and replinish my body that way.....now as soon as I get in, I am ready to chow down....I still lost 20lbs. So go figure!!!! I would do what you feel is best for you. I would think eating later would be the best.
I know what you mean. I haven't ran in a week and tomorrow I'm starting my 5 mile run again. I hate running. Oh well! I hope everything works out for you. ![]()
I would love to start working out in the mornings! Sadly I have early classes so I don't have enough time ![]()
But to answer your question- apparently you're suppose to have a little protein 30 minutes before your work out, and then some protein after your workout.
