Barbque baked lays has chicken fat. WTF? Is that really necessary?

What about this Tropicana Heart Healthy Orange Juice?

Fish oil in my orange juice. Yum.

Thanks for the warning, Tropicana, and for dancing your way around the fact that there's compressed fish juices in my pure, fruitly, refreshing orange drink.

By the way, yes, I did drink it without knowing. I've been vegetarian for 7 years. Not anymore!

With all due respect, it does specify on the carton that it contains Omega-3's.  Where did you think they came from?  Don't blame Tropicana for not reading the carton.

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutr ient&dbid=84

5/10 of the top foods they list are vegetarian. Flaxseed is the top food.

So can you explain why I would assume omega 3 means fish? Or did the public consciousness just not yet invade mine?

Do you really think that all vegetarians have as much knowledge as that? Come on. Just because we don't eat meat doesn't mean we know more about nutrition and additives. So besides your being wrong that omega-3 = fish, you're presuming that people should equate omega-3 with fish.

ON TOP of that, I think we can all agree that no one would even imagine that a company would put fish oil in orange juice. That's disgusting; and that's why it's not on the carton, only on the ingredients.

If people knew that, they simply wouldn't even buy it - vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

this is why the labeling in europe is far superior.  i used to live in the UK and everything was clearly color-code labeled for allergens (like brown for nuts and pink for fish or something) and there was also a label reading "suitable for vegetarians" that could go on products that might be sketchy.  for example, cheese made with microbial rennet instead of calf rennet would be labeled as being suitable for vegetarians, while a candy containing gelatin would not get the label.

clolitaa well if someone has chosen a diet that cuts out substantial part of food choices, maybe they should learn about nutrition and do look at the nutrition labels....

yea... I found that out after I had bought some and then read the package... do they REALLY need beef fat? Seriously? They obviously don't want any vegetarian or vegan clientele.

wow, why so pissy? What's your problem?

I do check my labels, thank you very much for this wise suggestion. And I do know a great deal about nutrition, so no reason to speak down to me like that. Yeah, sorry I didn't check the label of the ORANGE JUICE my mother in law bought. I still am human and I still have a life and I refuse to be so hyper paranoid and obsessive that I start checking labels of juices.

Hell, I don't have to defend myself here for simply putting a warning to fellow vegetarians who maybe happen to open someone's fridge one morning while still being tired because they want a cup of ORANGE JUICE. WITHOUT FISH OIL.

But thanks for the lecture. Have a great day.

umneydurak just has some tiny, insecure axe to grind about vegetarians who don't have disordered obsessions (vegetarian is an elite option, only for the most vigilant and well-informed. Also, I don't have any eating disorder...no way.. I just define my life by my bicycle.)

Vegetarians aren't a special class of hyper-paranoid, picky eaters. They just don't eat meat. I think anyone here would agree that fish is disgusting to most eaters, non-meat and vegetarian alike, and that orange juice with fish juice might even be considered a crime against the human senses.

Unless you're a supergod of nutrition, who sprinkles their cereal with ground-up oyster shell and laces their milk with cow blood, I don't think you would put fish scum in your juice.

I think we're also missing the really disgusting fact about all of this: the beef fat and fish oil used in these foods are waste products of other foods - they're the leftover sewage from packaged fish and beef. Ever seen "whey" in your food? They don't put it in random products because it's good for you; they do so because it's a cheap way of getting rid of it.

ha?

As for the whole issue of fish oil in orange juice. Once manufacturers start to "fortify" or "enhance" processed foods there is going to be weird stuff in the final product. They don't go by what makes sense, they go by what is cheapest. In this case fish oil which most likely is a by product of some other food manufacturing process.

My main reasoning in responding was that if you are a vegetarian, or you have severe food allergies (which I do) then you have to educate yourself about what food ingredients should be avoided.  I just assumed that most people who claim to be vegetarians would know that Omega 3's=Fish Oil.  My initial response was not directed at clolitaa in the first place, and it certainly wasn't intended to be rude or disrespectful.  It was just my opinion.

Understandable. Thanks for clarifying.

However, we've already addressed the misassumption that omega3=fish oil. Ever seen a Heinz mayonnaise container? It says omega-3, too.

I agree with the others about Omega 3's, I first think of flax (especially if it is a genuine "healthy" food... like what you would find at whole foods or something), and when I read the label and see "fish oil" I am disappointed and move on to the next product. Flax seeds are 6 times more rich in Omega 3's than fish oil... and I think flax seed oil would taste better in my orange juice than fish oil... I wonder how much sugar has to go in to mask the taste o.O

I agree is there a reason for beef in CHIPS.Thanks about the OJ.I guess I'll be reading juice labels also
