The big boys.. Guys with 100+ pounds to lose.

Quote  |  Reply

Where are all the men at?   I keep seeing lots of posts by all the women on what they are doing to lose the weight,  but not very many by the guys.   Where is everyone at?

I'm interested to see what the men on CC are doing to lose the weight,  what are you eating, excersizes, motivation and everything else.

well I don't have 100+ to lose, I had about 55 or 60 to lose. the main thing I have done is stop drinking and get more active, I walk about 12 miles per day, yesterday I walked 17 miles. not all at once...

as far as diet goes nothing radical, I still go to McDonalds once a week or so, but rather then getting the full meal I just get the sandwich.I have lost 24 pounds so far, almost half way to my goal. so it works for me....

as far as motivation I don't have a whole lot else to do at the moment, so it keeps me busy and helps keep me from getting depressed

Hi downdeep,

Seems as though guys are not as concerned with losing weight as women are but they should be. I do not have 100+ pounds to lose but am in the process of losing 30 pounds. Here are some of the tools I used to lose 20 pounds of it so far in 3 months.

A lot of elliptical and treadmill with some weight lifting thrown in. I try to spend 45 minutes a day on the combination of the elliptical and treadmill. Two days a week I do a weight training cycle. Most of the time I am able to burn 500 to 600 calories when doing the elliptical and treadmill. Doing the weights hels keep my muscles tone and fit.

Eating a lot of chicken and vegetables. There is a lot of ways to cook chicken. I grill it with different marinades and a lot of times make it in a crock pot with different flavors. That is my main protein but I also eat fish and even Tofu at times. Lots of veggies, fruits thrown in here and there and small portions of brown rice.

Not denying myself. I still eat pizza I just try to eat some vegetables beforehand to help curb the hunger. Instead of eating half a pizza I eat 2 slices and make sure to keep up on exercise which helps burn the calories. It is o.k. to have some of those "bad" foods but cut back on the portions and only do it a couple times a week.

Making smarter choices when eating out. It is difficult for me a lot of times to not be on the run and having to grab a quick bite. A lot of restaurants and fast food chains have nutritional information so plan ahead and map out what you can get that has limited fat and calories and fits in with you daily allotment of calories.

Plan out your lunches. If you take a little time on weekends to prepare some food for the week it really helps. I grill some extra Salmon or Chicken and make up some brown rice so I have it for the week. If you have the food ready to take it helps avoid the tempatation to just go out for lunch.

Stay focused on your goal. With plateaus it gets hard sometimes but just remember if you go through a plateau it will break. I just went through a couple weeks where I had lost less than a pound and now the weight is coming off again. Which brings me to the last and most important...

Use this website. There are a lot of good people with lots of good advice on here. They also offer support when you are going through a rough patch or getting frustrated. Join the group "Male Calorie Counters". I will admit there is not of activity but hopefully we can get it going because it is important for guys to have an outlet for things that are usually more specific for us.

I hope that will help you get started and please feel free to ask anything on these Boards because they are a great way to get a lot of advice and different opinions on a lot of issues that you can then take into consideration to make the decision that is best for you.

What simpsons quiz character are you?

I'm a guy! You're not alone. I used to be a lurker but decided to become an active member after I had a question I really wanted to ask my fellow CC members. I'm not in the weight loss phase though- I'm in maintenance now. Cool I lost 130 pounds by counting calories and exercising a whole lot. I am at my goal weight of 155lbs, which is down from 285lbs at my heaviest. I liked the way I went about losing my weight... the basics of what I did were:

  1. Stayed within my calorie budget, spent calories wisely.
  2. Exercised 6 days a week, made each trip to the gym count.
  3. Had a little support group- friends, family members, etc.
  4. Did not deny myself any certain food, just fit it into my calorie budget.
  5. I weighed myself once a week, charted my weight loss progress.

Those are just some of the things I did... it was a long and arduous journey, but I made it to the finish line and so can you!

Mo.

Wow!  Thanks for all the replies, and I'm sorry I've been so slow to respond.

I started this year out at 367 pounds.  I felt miserable.   I had no energy at all,  health problems began worsening and I knew something had to change.  I've tried many times to lose the weight with no success what so ever.   About six weeks ago I decided to start seeing a personal trainer at my local YMCA that I had a membership to.   I needed someone to help me out and keep me accountable.  So far,  I'm down to 330 and feel absolutely fantastic.  I have more energy, I can get around without being out of breath and have a much more positive outlook on everything.   Working with this personal trainer has made all the difference in the world.

Currently I'm in the gym 5 days a week doing cardio for an hour and 3 days a week with the trainer doing weight and resistance training.  I keep a log book of EVERYTHING I eat and bring it to him each time I see him so he can make notes and changes to my diet as he sees fit.  Right now I'm eating about 2000 calories per day, but the biggest part of the eating change for me has been about nutrition.   Before working with the trainer I looked at food solely as calories and nothing else.  Which was a huge mistake.   I paid no attention at all to what those calories were made up of.   Now I scrutinize everything I put in my body,  how much carbs, fat, protein, sodium etc etc etc.  And it's all made a difference in how I feel.   My short term goal is to be at 300 pounds by October 1st and long term goal to be at 200 pounds once again.   I have a long way to go,  but I'm in no rush.   I didn't gain it all overnight and I won't lose it that way either.   This to me is an entire lifestyle change to become healthier and not just a diet.   Thanks again for all the replies!  I appreciate it.
