BIG Breakfasts

Quote  |  Reply
Does anyone find that eating a 500 calorie breakfast helps regulate their eating throughout the day. Do you find that if you eat a bigger breakfast, you are less likely to pig out?/ how does this affect your appetite throughout the day?

I'd answer the question the other way around....  A small or rushed breakfast always leaves me feeling dissatisfied, a bit empty and more likely to head for a mid-morning snack.  I'm not sure I get 500 cals often ...  maybe 400.

I always have big breakfasts, usually between 400-500 calories. I am unable to snack mid-morning, and I can not focus at all unless I am full and satisfied.

yes, I always have a big breakfast when I will be out and about all day.

It depends for most people. I'm actually the opposite of the rule. I've eaten a big breakfast and yeah I'm full most of the day even with my meals in, but then it lurks night and I don't know if it's mentally or not, but I get starving! So I'll eat a decent sized breakfast which keeps me full, but save most of my calories for dinner. That way during my long sleep when I wake up I won't be so ravenous and can sleep decent without being so hungry to the point I can't sleep. Haha.

I have anywhere from 350-650 calories for breakfast! I have to have a big one or I'm hungry and obsessnig about food all day.....sometimes I jsut have one big breakfast (depending on what I'm goign to eat) or sometimes I split it into 2 breakfasts, one at 7:30ish and 1 at 9:00ish!

Breakfast I try to eat light.  I like nothing but fruit until noon.  What that does is it keeps your energy up because your digestive system is not working overtime, and it fills you up (thanks to the water).  I try not to combine proteins and carbs the rest of the day.  And always eat a salad and at least a glass of water in each meal..

I have also started a free forum (it is truly just starting up), if interested come on over at Really Quick Weight Loss Forums

I am just like vickideekers. I need a big breakfast or I'll be thinking about food all day. My typical breakfast is a four egg omlet with cheese and a lean meat. Usually around 400 calories, I think.

500 calories is not a big breakfast. 1000-1200 would be a big breakfast.

I always eat between 300-500 calories for breakfast and I find that it keeps me from going crazy the rest of the day.  I "front load" my caloires - so at lunch time I'll eat (depending if it's a day I'm working out or not) between 300-500 on days I'm working out and around 250 on days I don't.  Also,  if I'm not working out. I try to eat a light dinner - less than 450.

As you go you'll tweak the numbers on any given day - at least most people do. Depending on your personal goals.  I usually don't eat above 1500 for the entire day.

I just read in Shape that there was a study of women who had a large amount of weight to lose. After 8 months the average weightloss for those who ate a 500-600 calorie breakfast was 40 lbs, while the others who ate a small breakfast only lost 8 lbs. I thought that was interesting.

I can never eat heavy breakfasts. My appetite is sluggish in the morning and if I eat a lot for breakfast, I will feel bloated and stuffed. I always balance out my calories so I will eat lots of small and regular meals.

500 calories is quite small, but 1000 is over the top lol.

o.p, big breakfasts are good for you, they can help you feel satisfied for longer and give you energy througout the day. if you want a big breakfast eat 6-800 calories breakfast, 500 cals is like a starvation breakfast.

breakfast fanatic here! I eat a BIG bowl of cereal every morning with almond milk around 7am and then around 930-10 I have breakfast number 2 (1 pkg instant rolled oats with an apple...add a yogurt if Im up for it)...unless its a pancake and egg day...then I only have 1 yumilicious big bfast. I very much agree it makes me much less food obsessed throughout the day!

I like to save my large meal for the end of the day so I can eat dinner with my husband and not have to cook two separate things, so 500 cal would be a lot for me for breakfast.  What I have found to be the very best breakfast for the number of calories it contains is REAL (not instant) oatmeal made with 1 cup skim milk and topped with fruit - frozen strawberries are delicious.  It works out to about 275 cal, and I am still very full after eating at 8:30 at my desk.  I won't be hungry until after 11:30 usually.

The biggest thing is to limit the amount of refined sugar you eat for breakfast.  It can throw off your blood sugar and cause you to feel hungry when it isn't time for you to eat yet.  Go for protein and fiber, limit the sugar.
