hey guys,
I was watching the biggest loser last night. I was wondering how those guys could lose between 8-22lllbs in a week.
Anyone know? I mean, surely not. I know that they are working out hard, but what about their defecits? Now, I don't want (well ok I'd love to) or expect to be able to lose that fast - but I din't think it would be possible. I want to lose around 15llbs. As I was yelling NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! at the TV. They are working damned hard though.
Any thoughts?

I say that too!! That was alot of weigth in a short amount of time but because of their start weight could most of that have been water weight? Those were great results!!
Isn't it easy to lose a lot of weight in the beginning of a weight loss program when you have tonnes of weight to lose? I always understood that the more weight you have to lose, the quicker you are able to lose it in the beginning. Then it slows down, you know, just to irritate the crap out of you.
I think it's because they have so much extra weight and they radically change their habits. They aren't used to exercise or healthy eating so their bodies drop a lot of weight fast. The weightloss will probably slow down as they're on the program longer. Just as it's harder to drop the last 10 pounds, it's easy to drop the first ten when you're that overweight.
My girlfriend started talking about this this morning at work. She said she was so mad, she started to yell at the TV, "no way" and shut if off - screaming "it's all lies"
I laughed my butt off this morning when she imitated her behavior! The only conclusion that I draw from this, is:
1. These are people who have an enormous amount of weight to lose and any change for the better leads to drastic improvements in weight loss.
2. People who have more to lose, lose large amounts in the beginning faster.
3. They may be detoxing their bodies and only eating protein and green veggies.
4. They may have started exercising and if they have never exercised before, this leads to a drastic weight loss improvement.
5. Dieting and exercising after never doing so = double wammy on the weight loss for the week.
6. They are not only reducing their calories by 500 calories a day. Some of them may eat 4000 calories a day to sustain - and some my have reduced caloric intake by 2000 or more calories.
It stinks because I have always worked out and been health conscious... reducing my caloric intake by 500 a day does little for me which equals slow weight loss = not quite as motivating as if I could lose 1-2 pounds a week.

When I had lots of weight to lose I lost the first 10 lbs in the first week - just by changing my eating habits and walking for 15 minutes a day. If I had a personal trainer and dietician I probably could have lost alot more.
Since quiting smoking 14 months ago I find losing the 20 lbs I put on after alot harder this time around. I work out 60 minutes a day now plus more on some days.

Speaking from expierience, yes, larger people can loose the weight quickly the first couple of weeks. When I was 260 pounds and started eating right and being more active, I would see 10 pound weight loss weeks. Keep in mind, I was easily putting down 4000 calories a day, more on other days. Hell, I would have 6 Mt. Dews in 1 day, that's 1000 calories without any food! The weigh in last night was true.
Weren't you all proud of Minesota!! I thought she got the raw end of the deal in the vote out. However she lost 66pounds herself.!! I think that is fantastic!!
I haven't watched the show, but I was thinking about it because it has someone from each state. I thought it would be cool to cheer on the person from your state. How sad that she's already gone (I'm in Minnesota).
Yep: I liked the part that they showed at the end. She did so well, I guess that once she had the knowledge and the motivation, she could do as well as everyone else.
The trainer - female, has great abs too - motivated me to do some extra crunches before bed. Burn baby burn.

"tbassngal" - I'm in Michigan too!! I live in Westland for now, and work in Canton!! :-)
Love the Biggest Loser. :-) Suzie & Andrea from last season are "friends" on my myspace account even. Ha ha.

I read in a post once about the biggest loser that they workout like 6-8 hours a day! It's insane. I guess if I worked out that much, well I would probably die but I guess if i didn't I would lose that much weight too.
I was looking into the show. I think it sucks that they sent all
those people home who thought they were going to get help with their
weight loss. I mean, anyone can do it at home. Did they
give them any resources at all to help? Like maybe a personal
trainer or something? I also think that working out until you
vomit if you're not in any kind of shape to start out could seriously
give someone that heavy a heart attack.
Honestly, if I knew I was going on that show, I'd have eaten nothing but sodium the week before the first weigh in to maximize my loss for the first weigh in. So maybe that's partially behind the huge losses. I lost 10 lbs the first week myself, but still.

townes - I am in Michigan as well. My parents live in Indiana so I was cheering on the girl from Indiana she seems really motivated to lose the weight. I was a little disappointed that New Jersy ( I think) didn't get picked. She had a great story but when she wasn't she got an attitude per se.
twindaze,
Yes, They gave them all kinds of help for the ones sent home. They set them up with their own personal workouts and eating plans, etc. They just have to stick with it to be able to lose the weight on their own. I think this is testing the show to see how much you can lose on your own versus the intensity of having a personal trainer and nutritionist day in and day out versus your own motivation.

But I wonder if the ones sent home have to go to work. There's no
way to workout 6 to 8 hours per day when you work, or even in my case
if you care for your children all day.
Still, though, it would be worth it for all the resources they gave you even if you had no chance to win. There's no way I'd have gone on national TV in a sports bra though. If you saw my chest you'd understand. It's huge in a way that should never happen, not really due to fat, but more to breastfeeding. Oh well.
