Biggest Losers TV show...They aren't EATING enough! (warning:spoiler)

Quote  |  Reply
I am watching it right now and with all the working out they do...some are having problems....and EVEN GAINING weight. They said it was from trying to cut out too many calories and they need to focus on that. WOW! Even with trainers and all that jazz....it is hard to get it through "our" heads as humans that we NEED to eat enough to lose weight. I am amazed!

YES, I saw that.  I felt sorry for Jenn.
I watched part of it.  I don't see how anyone can lose 10 pounds in one week.
I think on some seasons there have been people who have lost as much as 30.  I am suprised that there have not been any casualties.

The Biggest Loser tv show is (1) entertainment and (2) a competition.  It is NOT a handbook for healthy weight loss. Yes, exercise is good for you. No, if you are 300 pounds you probably shouldn't start off doing 4-6 hours of it per day (unless, like the contestants, you've been hand-picked and pre-screened by doctors before getting to go on the show!)

(Granted, many people are inspired by the show to lose weight, and do it at a reasonable pace and in healthy ways.)

=^..^= MOLLY

I love watching the show, but I really think they should have a more realistic one. Can most of us workout for 4 hours a day? No. I wish they'd do one where they followed people around for 3 months, or whatever, and did it sensibly while working a full time job. And at the end of that, a "biggest loser". I would LOVE to drop 5lbs/week, but that's not going to happen with my schedule!
That's what I try to explain to people. These celebrities that we so badly want to look like....it is their job to be hot/sexy. So they spend their time working on that--it is their only real responsibility in between photo shoots & movies. If my job was to be drop dead sexy, you bet I would be at the gym all day every day. But most of us have actual jobs and school/kids to balance on top of that. Not to mention being limited to realistic budget for food and not being able to afford to hire our own personal trainers and have them live in our pent house to keep on top of us every minute of every day. We, in the "real world" do what we can...that stuff on TV is something beyond us and we should not feel bad.

I'm sure that when contestants are picked that they are screened thoroughly.  You can not just stick a morbidly obese person on a show and watch them lose weight.  They have to do ekg's, ecg's, stress tests, blood work etc.  This show has to make sure that the only thing unhealthy about these people is their weight.

I love this show, its motivating, even more motivating to see people not lose anything or gain or just lose one pound.  It makes me feel that okay, its not just me.  From what I've read they multiply their weight by 7 and exercise probably all of that away.  I have to somewhat agree with slvrgrndm99 about having a more realistic show, something biggest loser may be able to capitalize on.  The have sign-ups where people do this at home.  Premier them at the end of the show along with the voted out contestant or before the commercial a quick 15 second blurp this is Joe Smoe and he has lost 40 pounds, and is Americas biggest loser of the week!  I need a job.

If you want a more realistic show, we have one in Canada called "X-Weighted".  It's on the Slice network.  They take regular people (who work full time, have kids, etc. ) and follow them for 6 months.  They take measurements and weigh them.  If any of you are Canadian, I recommend it.

Happyteacher...

I love that show! Sometimes I try to go to the gym and walk on the treadmill while it is on because it keeps me going! I can't believe sometimes how the people "get" the chance to have all that help, and then rebel against it! Sheesh! Put me on....I will listen!

It is on in the states too, on Dicovery Health.

I wish I had Discovery Health.  I would watch it.  I love all the weight loss shows.  They inspire me.  While I know that Biggest Loser is unrealistic in the real world it is amazing what they can accomplish.  I also enjoy Celebrity Fit Club.
The show was great last night but i do wish they would give us a sample of what they eat. Also, do you think The fat smash diet works....(Celebrity FIt Club) What is your take on that diet?

Thanks
I think it's great. More people should take their health seriously. Why is taking a few months off to get your health back in order a bad thing. A lot of people like the candidates on the show are morbidly obese. I think this is a great plan (with a doctors supervision of course) to permanently get down to a manageable size. Let's face it, most people diet and exersize for years and give up periodically only to gain the weight back because it is such a long gruelling process.

When you're that large, you can lose a lot more weight in a weeks time than an average weight person and it still be considered safe.

They multiply their weight by 7 ?????!!! That's insane. That gives me the exact amount of calories I was eating before....1500. Eating that is what got me into this freaking mess. I started gaining weight on that amount. Maybe that number is just a myth.

I do like the show, but its obvious that it's not reality.

well, a more realistic show would be boring.  X-weighted is.  a more realistic show would be like our lives.  i don't need to watch that on TV.

i missed it last night.  can someone give me a brief recap?

I am not good with names, but I will try to re-cap it for you...

They had a challenge to detrmine teams.

Instead of the "losers" trying to win it, Jillian and Bob had to do it. It was a gruelling challenge of trying to go up and down a mall excalator. (really looked HARD!) Bob won and chose.....Orange, Black, and Grey. Jillian got Blue, Purple, and Yellow.

Bob's team immediately wins a challenge...who's team can keep going on the excalator the longest and win 10,000 to share.

They all work out hard, blah blah blah......

Weigh in comes...Bob's blue team does pretty good. Jillian's Black team needs to average 6 lbs each. Purple did good, blue had little losses...Yellow woman lost 0 and Yellow guy gained 3 (I am pretty sure about those #'s) Yellow guy said he tried cutting his calories by 5-600 to try to compete with the big guys on Bob's team.

They had to vote one person on Jillian's team off, and it was the shorter girl on purple team....Update on her was she was continueing and at about 200 lbs...Looked pretty good :)

That's about the story and I am sticking to it!

thanks, malone!

sounds like they're trying hard to manipulate things so that jillian doesn't look like the far-superior trainer that she is.  anyway, i'm not sorry to see that purple girl go.  she was holding her friend back.  weird, how they focused so hard on lazy neill while ignoring whatever that girl was doing wrong.

now that the mother-daughter team is gone, i think i'm pulling for the mother-son group.  although i really like the BL team, too (blue?)

No prob! You are welcome.

I am rooting for orange too...I think the son is funny and he is looking much healthier! I would be proud if I was his mom! It is good to see such a comitted family doing it together.

I think one of the reasons some of the people lost so much weight this week is because they purposefully gained weight last time because of that alliance.  Especially the mother/son team.  Last week they only lost a pound or two each.  If that was water weight (from drinking a lot before the weigh-in) they could just pee most of it back out!  And then it would look like they'd lost more this week.  That being said - I do really like the mother / son team.
I love that show X-weighted...It comes on the Discovery Health Channel!  It is way more realistic.  It focuses on people trying to change their lifestyle while still working and living everyday life.  I do have to say that I also like Biggest Loser as well, it really does motivate me.

I watched X-weighted today!

The guy on it had a huge accident involving falling off a ladder and cracking his head open right before his last weigh in - he ended up discharging himself from the hospital so that he could have his last weigh in and measurements taken.

I was so inspired by his outlook!

I also have to admit that up until this recent Biggest Loser, I watched it religiously - for some reason, this season is just not my cup of tea.  I'm starting to miss it!

(And I wish I had Jillian as my trainer!)
