Have you ever binged but not gained weight from it?
So I want some truthful answers here. :P
If I go over 1400 for the day, I gain. Otherwise, no.
The problem with this question is that people have foolish definitions of bingeing. Like, of course the people who normally eat 1200 calories and then suddenly "binge" eating an extra 400 calories in grapes aren't going to gain weight.
wistfulxthinking, I thought you were recovering from an ED.. it's so triggering when I see that other people "recovering" are still undereating.
I don't know...ignoring artificial weight gain (water/food weight) I used to find my weight would return to "normal" within a few days after binging.
I didn't say anything about not eating. =P I said that I gain if I go over 1400. So, if I binge, eat more than 1400, then yes, I'll gain. My body doesn't go "well, hey. Today was actually a binge, so lets just discard these calories.."
One day eating over 1400 calories isn't going to make you gain fat because 1400 calories is probably already too low anyway. Your body can't make a pound of fat with 400 extra...
I can't tell whether I've gained 'real weight" after a bad day.. but I do know that last fall when I was first starting to 'get healthy' again I ate healthy/normal most of the time but I overate really badly a handful of times (and didn't restrict extra to make up for them). I didn't gain.
It also depends on the person and how much the binge was..
...Well, yes.. technically it would make you gain weight. You're constantly storing and consuming energy.
Everyone is different. There are some people who only expend 800 calories a day - eating 900 /would/ make them gain weight.
I couldn't gain weight from bingeing unless I did it almost every day for a sustained period (like a week).
i've never noticed a weight gain after a binge. i think it's in people's head that they gain weight after one binge, and in reality they've just been eating way more calories than they'd like to think they are on a daily basis, and it makes them feel a lot better about themselves and their self control issues to blame it on one period of over eating. i see people over eating constantly and claiming that they just have a slow metabolism. i really think it's a delusion though, i honestly think they believe they aren't eating any more than someone like me does. i think most of what overweight people think and what is reality is genuine delusion, just like with chronically underweight people. it's not like they're consciously lying to themselves, it's really a real misconception of reality. i also think it has a lot to do with how you were raised and the examples that were set for you. the portion size that you become accustomed to is dictated by the portions that your parents ate and the portions that they gave you. i remember going to mcdonald's as a family when i was a child and all of our food easily fitting on one tray, and we'd see another family have one tray full of food for each person. also, my parents never made us "clean our plates" like a lot of my friends' parents would, and my grandparents always used to say. we ate when we were hungry, and we ate as much as we felt like eating. there was never really an emphasis put on food one way or the other. my parents didn't have to limit us on junk food or anything, they'd buy a box of twinkies and it would last for a week or two. there was always pop and juice or whatever in the fridge, but we drank more water than pop. we were also never limited on video games, tv, or computer time because we spent enough time outside doing stuff as you would want your kid to. it's really all about what a child is raised to perceive to be normal.
by the way, i also think the amount of calories you inadvertently burn in a day is highly dependent upon learned behaviors from your parents. people might think i have a high metabolism, but really i expend more energy just sitting down watching tv than the average person because i'm constantly fidgeting and shaking, just like my mom. i remember my dad always saying to my mom, "karn-mary, yer shaking the whole house, do you mind?" because she'd shake her leg constantly. i also remember him saying when i was a really little kid, "look at that, you've got the kids doing it, that's really an obnoxious habit"
after starving myself for quite a long time, i snapped and ate two 3 musketeers bars, a Cinnabon, entire package of cheddar Chex Mix, a small bag of potato chps, a starbucks frappuchino, and a coffee cake, and i lost weight, most likely because it shocked my metabolism..
well just saying..and i was at the airport traveling alone at 2am waiting for my next flight which is probably why i went crazy..

it really shocks me that more people don't commit suicide in airports. i've spent more time contemplating blowing my brains out while being stuck in an airport than i'd like to recall. they should have like kitten and puppy rooms in airports to keep people from becoming dangerously bored.
In my experience, one binge will make you gain, but it won't make you fat. As long as you don't do it regularly or make a habit of it, bingeing and cheating doesn't set you back all that much.
the scale usually will show a little gain, but most likely, it's just sodium :D and you don't want to binge too often, but i think it really IS good for you
I never "binge", but I once overate (Valentine's day/treats at school) and I actually lost weight the next day. :/ The body works in weird ways.

unless you're in a wheel chair, you're not expending only 800 calories a day. or maybe a small infant child. anyone else, no.
im 5 ft 9 and i burn over 1700 cals if i dont move all day. of course, people dont just sit around all day, and when you move you're burning more calories. which is why if you look at the nutritional information label on food products, it says "*Based on a 2000 calorie diet" because people move around and do things that causes them to burn more calories than they would sitting around all day, and thus need more calories taken in.
and by eating an extra 100 cals NO ONE will gain weight. i laugh at that. theres approx 3500 calories in a pound of fat. anything you gain from a binge of 400 calories is food mass (the weight of the actual food you ate as it sits there half digested in your intestines and stomach) and water weight.
"Never get into a battle of wits without any ammunition"
You may have a high metabolism but if you think you burn a lot of calories by fidgeting, you are fooling yourself.
Although I don't weigh myself the day after a binge, once I overate on Greek food and desserts so that I went a little over 2500 cals, but that very week I lost more weight than a normal week.
Honestly,
sometimes i cant control my urges. my binges are like half of a 2 gallon tub of ice cream. whole boxes of mini wheats. whole boxes of wheat thins and peanut butter. I mean high cal stuff here!
Because I eat relatively well the rest of the time and because I stay active even if its twenty minutes a day. I do not gain weight. I've weighed the same since I was 16 on my drivers license. ( i am 20) and i have never starved myself the day after scared i was going to be fat!
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
