Does birth control affect weight loss/gain?

I've heard rumors that being on the pill makes you gain weight, does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

The hormones in the pill can increase your appetite.  But the only way you gain weight is by eating too much. So keep control of the portions, do some exercise and you should more than offset any effects of the pill.
It truly depends upon the woman in question. It doesn't just happen overnight by any means. As Gi-Jane was saying you gain by eating too much. So as long as you continue to have a balanced lifestyle you shouldn't have an issue. Some people are prone to experiencing more side effects in general.

I think it depends on what you're taking.  I was put on BC as a kid (13) and I gained weight on it.  I had been underweight and rapidly gained weight and lost it as soon as I was off of it.

Recently I started Yaz for PMDD and contraception and it hasn't increased my appetite, but now I no longer have cramps or severe mood swings that control my poor habits.  Before I would lose 2 weeks of the month, couldn't exercise, stayed in bed a lot, was obsessed with rich, fatty foods.  I can exercise all the time now, even during TTOM.

i've been on the pill for two years, and completely agree with gi-jane... you can only gain by overeating.  just monitor your cals.

No. It all depends on what you eat.

I started a new birth control pill three months ago. Prior to that, I had been losing one poind per week. Since going on the pill I have not gained weight, but I have not lost anything either. (The only time I lose a pound is in the 4th week of pills, where you take the placebo pills, but that pound in back the next week). I monitor my calories on this website, so I know that I have not increased the amount that I eat. I have not changed the amount that I work out either, although I have increased the intensity. I do think that the pill has something to do with my inability to lose weight, but I cant say for certain whether it's real weight that I am holding on to, or water weight.

The various different pills affect women differently. I have never found that the pill caused an increase in my appetite, and i didnt change my diet or exercise habits and i put on weight. But if you find this, ask your doctor to put you on a different pill. You might have to try a few different ones before you find a contraceptive pill that if right for you.
