birth control and blood clots
So I've had off and on problems with aches in my calf muscles for years. my gyno. said that it was prob. caused by a lack of calcium. I was off of my birth control pill for about 4 months and when I recently started taking it again my leg cramps returned and it was then that I realized that there was a connection. I spoke with my Dr. about and she is concerned and thinks that I may have the beginning of blood clots and that I may never be able to take any kind of bc. I'm pissed because my period are way worse when I'm not on the pill! She wants me to track my leg aches and maybe in a few months she might try me on a very low dose bc pill and see if the aches return.
Anyone have a similar situation?
my situation isn't exactly similar, but i'll chime in to say that if you're developing clots, you don't want to screw around. i developed pulmonary embolism after major surgery back in early may. thought i was having a heart attack. luckily, i was still in hospital, and i had the sense to complain, and they jumped right on it.
i'm still on warfarin therapy, still having my blood drawn and tested twice a week and my dosage adjusted accordingly (my INR--clotting time--has never stabilized). i'll have a few more weeks of this, then a full hematology screen to find out for sure if i have a clotting disorder or not.
you can use an IUD or any barrier method. it's a pain in the ass, but a clot can kill you.
btw, you should probably be having ultrasound on your legs to look for existing clots. i can't believe your doctor's approach is to take you off the pill and wait and see....
This is the reason I'm no longer on BC. About 4 years ago, I started having trouble breathing. Just walking across the room would cause me to be out of breath. I went to see my family Dr. & she did a chest x-ray and ran some other test in the office that were inconclusive. Because of my age (25 @ the time) and the fact that I was on BC at the time, she suspected that I had a blood clot in my lungs and sent me immediatly to the hospital for a cat scan. At this point I had never had ANYTHING wrong health-wize in my life, so I was scared to death!! The scan revealed no clots & I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma, but from that day on, I have never taken another BC pill.
Thanks for sharing your story. Not to defend my Dr. b/c we all make mistakes and what not but I think the reason she's being sceptical is bc I told her that stetching and working out helps and that taking a calcium pill helps too. She wants me to take a multivitamin and a calcium supplement but I wont know whether it is the birth control or a calcium deficiency if I change my diet/supplements now. I had the leg aches yesterday but I also started my period and thats when I usually get them. I took a calium pill and it didnt bother me for the rest of day.
