Hi! I was wondering if anyone has had experience with telogen effluvium related to birth control.
I was on Alesse for 4 mos, but had breakthrough bleeding three of the four weeks, so I was switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. However, I am now having a huge shed-- like 100-150 hairs a day.
I have also had breakthrough bleeding, severe mood swings, and dry eyes.
I am being switched to Seasonique... so hopefully the shedding will stop.
Has anyone had any experiences like this, and how long did the shed last?
My hair thins when I'm stressed or not eating enough fat in my diet.
The hair loss is a side effect of birth control. I am on the depo and my hair is staying in tact pretty well. BUT I have weirdddd TMI issues with the depo, so I wouldn't suggest throwing you into that boat.
Let us know if the switch helps! I'm curious to know.
I experienced hair loss with the Nuva Ring. My obgyn said she hadn't heard of anyone else having the same problem. I switched to seaonique and hair is not falling out anymore. I like it ok but it isn't doing well for my acne. I just can't win!
Good luck!
There are a lot of medications that are not hair friendly especially a lot of Birth Control medications. I started suffering from Alopecia about 4 years ago. I researched and learned a lot from several other sites. I stoped taking BC years ago because of the health issues it was causing. Sometimes it is really just not worth it. I don't know if we are allowed to post sites in replys on here but I do know several goood sites for women that I have been going to for a couple of years now. Lot of information on BC and results the women have had. I know some have posted names on BC that are considered hair friendly. If anyone would like the links please let me know.

I have not experienced any hairloss issues related to the pill, but I thought I'd just give some info. Throughout the last several years I have been on Aleese, Yasmin, Seasonale Yaz and Seasonique. The only two that are at all worth it for me are Seasonale and Seasonique. I know some people hate the idea, but these are awesome pills for those of us who get very long (8 days) and painful (can't move) periods, who can't deal with not functioning 2-3 out of every 28 days.
Right now I am on Seasonique and have had slight problems with breakthrough bleeding (although I believe it is a strong possibility that can be attributed to steriods that I had been put on for a few weeks). The first 2 or so packs you may experience some breakthrough which is annoying, but once your body gets used to it, it really helps with the cramps and the length of your period (it did for me at least!). I found Yaz and Yasmin absolutely terrible. Even when I took them for a month at a time I'd have breakthrough and they didn't help with the cramps/headaches.
It's probably from the hormones, as those greatly affect hair production. I'd talk to your doc about finding a different one. BC can also cause hair growth 2.. I now have 2 hairs on my chin that need to be plucked monthly lol.
I was on seasonale (now seasonique) and i hated it. I ruined every pair of underwear i owned because of the break through bleeding. and it wasnt just like one day here, one day there... it was for the last month of the three month cycle. I have extremely painful periods, but i couldnt stand it... i had to stop taking it. I would rather deal with monthly periods and have to use painkillers than to have to buy new underwear every month.
and since you said something about the hairloss I'm going to talk to the GYN, I'm on Femcon.
elizabeth- how many cycles did you go through? I can't imagine giving up after only one. Surely your body cannot adjust that quickly.
For me no matter what pill I'm on I take a few months worth before I get my period, if your periods are that painful I would suggest you doing that with a different pill. But no matter what it will take your body several cycles to adjust.
