Birth control and weight gain

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone know of a birth control pill that does not cause weight gain? Last December I was put on Desogen and since then I have gained 10 pounds that wont seem to budge no matter how much I diet and exercise.  I also have a much lower sex drive.  Has anyone else had this issue and have any tips?

I am on bc because of an irregular period and acne if this helps;)

I'm not sure what the research says, but I have had really good luck with Ortho Tri-cyclene... no weight gain at all and it definitely has helped with bleeding and cramps! I have heard of people gaining on the pill, but this one worked for me...

What I have seen in the research is that no BC, across a population, causes weight gain. A lot of women attribute weight gain to BC when it's due to factors tied into it- like being in a relationship, or being a teenager and thus going through puberty (2 times when people are likely to start BC). This doesn't mean that it's not a side effect for some people, but it's going to be very individual. Try some different kinds and see what works for you.

Usually birth control itself doesn't lead to weight gain.  What happens is that it can increase your appetite, causing you to eat more, which, in turn, leads to the gains.  As long as you stay within your calories, you really shouldn't gain weight.

Also, birth control pills work differently with everyone.  That being said, I've been on Yaz for three months now (I think) and I haven't really had any issues with it.  It's also helped with lessening my cramps and flow.  I've heard it's great for clearing up skin as well.

I hope that helps and remember that there are tons of options out there, so don't be afraid to try different ones if you're not satisfied with the one you have.  But at the same time, give it a few months to see how things play out; at first I thought I was hungrier on Yaz but I realised that my increased appetite was actually due to something else and it seems back to normal now.

Definitely have the lower sex drive ever since I started on my BC :[ my boyfriend and I are rather sad about that...

I've been on Yaz and Orthotricyclene.

I didn't gain weight on either one and I also didn't lose my sex drive.  Yaz didn't help so much for my face, though.

im on marvelon and have been on it for almost a year...i find it to be really good...i used to have really heavy periods and dont anymore and cramps are way weaker!! i also havent gained weight since being on it!

i heard depo is realllllyy bad for weight gain?

i've been on yasmin for a while & i love it, no complaints at all!

& before i was on alesse, wasn't really a fan (spotting was terrible).. no weight gain though!

I have been on YAZ for 6 months now and have had no weight gain, weird cravings, or side effects.

The first month, I was a bit nauseated in the mornings. Other than that, it has been great. My cycle is like clockwork and my skin is clear for the first time since I can remember.

My OBGYN said that the weight gain that women sometimes experience is due to the hormonal changes that lead to overeating.

Before your period do you tend to overeat? or get cravings? then you might gain. idk presonally I crave chocolate on my period but I havent gained any weight since being on the pill. I would say if you need to be on it, go for it.

i am on loestrin 24 fe and it has not made me gain weight. i have been on different types of pills and i can tell you the one that DID make me gain weight was Seasonale, maybe because it had more hormones in it. This is why i like loestrin, there is a low dose of hormones. The only thing about loestrin that i find weird is that i have not had my period for a while now (and no, i'm not underweight, im 5'4" 130), and my doctor says this is completely normal.. so hey i'll take it!

I def have not been eating more.  My diet and exercise has not changed at all, yet in the past 10 months I have put on 10 pounds.  If anything, I eat less now.  It's so frustrating!  No matter what I do I just cannot budge my weight!

I would definitely visit your OBGYN then to make a switch. Try something maybe with a low hormone dosage

Go for nuva ring - no pill to remember and the low continuous hormones result in fewer "ups and downs".  I had mood swings with a few different pills and have been on nuva ring for 8 months now - best thing ever!

It has the same rules as the other birth control pills. I didn't gain any weight unless I stuffed my face with food all week... but that'll happen without birth control.

I second Nuvaring.  I've been on it for over 2 years and have been pleased with it.
