Birth Control and Weight Gain

Does anyone have ideas on how to limit weight gain when you're on birth control???

I think the best option in any case would be to try different sorts until you find something without that particular side effect.

In my experience there's 2 types of weight gains you get from birth control. One you get from getting an increased appetite and the other I think is derrived from the body holding too much water.

In both cases I'd seriously suggest you switch to another brand.

i have had zero issues with weight gain and birth control, actually- it tends to be a myth. of course, it depends on what brand you're using. it's best to ask your doctor which they recommend for you, and go from there.

darlingsevil-can I ask what kind of birth control you're on?
I was starving when I was on birth control pills and I also gained weight right after I got married by going on the pill. I found that other methods of birth control really helped me keep my weight the same and not to go up.
I've been on the pill since I was 15 (now 20) and I've never experienced weight gain. I'm on Yasmin and it's really great.

It is very far from a myth actually. How you react to birth control is very individual and you're most likely one of the lucky who aren't affected in that particular way. Sadly, doctors have no real way of foreseeing how you'll respond to a particular brand. The only way to know for sure is to try it. That your sister or mother  can handle it is no guarantee for it to be good for you (And yes, this is a topic I am very much engaged in as my younger sister got a blood clot).

When it comes to weight issues, my experience with the p-shot (a depot version of birth control that you take every 3 months) completely messed up my apetite. I was constantly hungry. I could eat a mountan of food and still be starving half an hour later. And I was also constantly cranky because I was hungry. That in combination with several other unpleasant side effects made me quit it and apetite was back to normal.

I have several friends and a sister whom, without having changed their eating/exercise habits notably, have gained a lot of weight after starting with various kinds of birth control. They've also lost the extra weight after changing brands. So writing weight gain off as a myth is a big mistake imo. If you need birth control it is generally a good idea to carefully observe what's going on with your body and mind and not be afraid to demand another brand or type if you notice negative changes.

yeah, sorry darlingsveil but entrhopy is right. My mom is a doctor, she's the one who prescribes me my bc and before I even started on it we went through all my options which she said automatically that i shouldn't get the depo-shot which most def would cause some weight gain. I tried a bunch of diff kinds, the pill is known to increase appetite because of the severe influx of hormones and I gained about 10lbs, the patch didn't seem safe enough, i didn't even want to try the shot. In my case, I found that the nuva ring was and is my favorite choice (been on it for...4 yrs). no weight gain, no sudden increase in hormones (yasmin also known for that as well)

so...yeah, i don't really have any lifestyle suggestions to help you curb weight gain while on the pill...so i say go Nuva Ring! and for those burning questions: No, you can't feel it, no, he can't feel it, and yeah you have to put it in and take it out which takes all of 5 seconds but it's your body and you should be able to handle it if you're able to handle having sex.

good luck! :)

I've had some gain on my pills... and after being off them from forgetting too much for a month in order to get back on schedule, I gained weight again. It is insane sweets cravings and hunger for me... I've considering asking my doc about the nuva ring. My main problem is scheduling to take the pill everyday- I'm not on it due to sexual activity (yet) but that is hopefully within the near future so forgetting is BAD. Yasmin is known for being veeeery bad actually... everyone I know on that one has had issues with weight gain, and most have had mood issues.

I think one of the best things about the nuva-ring is the fact that you don´t have to remember when you took your last pill etc. It´s also a fairly low dose of hormones, which is what I liked about it.

As I said earlier, it&nbs p;is impossible to know h ow you will respond. Howe ver, from what I have&nbs p;heard and experienced person ally, Nuva-ring definitely has  been the one that h as had the least side&nbs p;effects.
