I'm having a birthday party next week and i want to have a healthy birthday cake.

I'm going to customize one at publix because its the closest bakery to me.

what kinda of cakes are the healthiest? by healthy i mean low cal, low fat, and some nutritional value that ACTUALLY has a nice taste.

i need help on choosing the type of cake, the frosting, the filling (maybeeee) and the toppings.

(angel cake, marble cake, etc.) which is healthiest?

I really want to be able to enjoy my cake w/o worrying about the calories. oh and i dont eat chocolate or nuts so please dont suggest that.

Thanks!

i would say that the lowest calorie is probably going to be angel food cake. its made with egg whites and i think its delicious. get it with a whipped frosting if possible as opposed to a thick gooey one. or a glaze instead of frosting and throw some berries on top of it.

If possible, don't get your cake at the grocery store - make it yourself. Healthy cakes have less fat and more fiber and skip the icing entirely. You're not going to get that from a store-bought cake. There's no such thing as a 'healthy' store-bought cake unless you go to a very expensive healthfood shop to get it.

I would bake your own like kajikit suggested. I found a really awesome looking recipe for another poster the other day that looks particularly delicious:

It is a wholegrain cake and offers alternatives to pears if not a fan of them in plums, though probably any autumn-y fruit like apples would probably work okay. If you really insist on wanting to make it healthier you can make adjustments such as using applesauce instead of butter in the mix and spraying the tin with cooking spray, using one whole egg and one white and so on, but I find the best cake is a well-made one made to recipe that you just enjoy a smaller piece of.

Cele's Old-Fashioned Pear Cake Recipe

1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus 2 tablespoons melted
All-purpose flour for dusting
1 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
6 firm but ripe small pears such as Seckel, cored and cut lengthwise into quarters

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Brush a 9-inch round springform pan with the 2 tablespoons melted butter, and dust the pan with a thin, even layer of flour, tapping out the excess. Set aside. Whisk together the whole-wheat pastry flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.

Using an electric mixer, beat together the 1/2 cup butter and the sugar on high speed until pale, light, and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, add the eggs, and beat again until well combined. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the dry ingredients just until combined. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and neatly arrange the peat quarters on top, skin side up. Bake for about 1 hour, or until the top is nicely browned and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 10 to 15 minutes before removing it from the pan.

Note: to prepare the original version with the Italian prune plums, use 12 plums, pitted and halved, in place of the pears.

Serves 10.

the healthiest cake you could buy would be an angel food cake topped with whipped cream (if they have a fat-free kind?) and berries of some sort.

however, if you can make a cake at home - i suggest you do so. you could try "diet coke cake" (diet coke substitutes the oil, butter and eggs, etc) or you could replace the oil, butter and eggs with applesauce. there are tons of low-calorie cake recipes on cc.

happy birthday in advance!

I am with every one else. I just did this in the end of September. I made a regular cake with regular icing for everyone else but for the kids (and my newly turned two year old) I made an angel food cake. I try to keep my son away from all of the processed sugars for now. It was really good. That's the cake that I ate. I didn't go all out and get a recipe because I honestly just didn't have the time. If I had had the money I probably would have bought an angel food cake but I had to get the box mix and make it myself. But if your going to make a cake, go with one of those recipes the others mentioned. If your going to buy one...get an angel food cake. Probably going to be the best choice. Good Luck and happy eating!

angel cake is fat free, but if you still want flavor and it to be good for you, i think on the kraft website they have this "angel lush" recipe. Basically the angel cake was sliced into 3 layers, and in between each layer was a mixture of sugar free vanilla pudding and crushed pineapples. yummm!

any other ideas?

I would make mini cupcakes..portion controlled and just limit yourself to one and make sure there are enough people there to eat the rest. Then have healthy other options there as well.

To make it even healthier...You could make angel food cake cupcakes topped with some Fat Free whipped cream and topped with berries.
