bison anyone?
Anyway; as opposed to my grilled chicken parm whole wheat wrap; I took a leap of faith and ordered.......BISON! I've never had it before and heard it was jam packed with protein.
So; w/ a little bison; w/ a little low-fat cheese; and with a little hot sauce; I had the best lunch ever for only 490 calories (nutrition info is on website). It was the best thing I have ever eaten since the carvel from this weekend (LOL)
So; for all the pregnant ladies looking for something different packed with lean protein- go with the bison! I know it sounds gross (and game-y) It was super good!!
How much different is the recommended protein amount in the 3rd trimester versus the 1st and 2nd?
I googled it and I came up with the following:
http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/MEETING/004/M2833E/ M2833E00.HTM
To support a gain of 1.0 g N or 6.25 g protein per day with a 30 percent efficiency of utilization, 20 additional g protein are needed in the diet. If an additional 30 percent is added to cover individual variability, the incremental dietary protein need for pregnancy is about 25 g. Thus, a reference pregnant woman consuming a diet with a protein score of 70 should add 25 g protein to the 41 recommended for the nonpregnant state (12) bringing the total to 66 g protein per day.

There is an increased demand for protein during pregnancy particularly in the second half of pregnancy. The normal protein requirement of adult women is 1gm/kg body weight. During pregnancy the Indian Council of Medical Research recommend an additional 15 gm/day. The additional protein is essential to meet growing tissue demands. For this additional daily requirement allowance, a good quality protein like milk or egg protein per day has to be supplemented.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find anything for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd trimester specifically.
I log all my foods still so I have the handy-dandy Analysis function to tell me what my grams are.
but I'm getting it again today. The one thing I can say was that it was VERY lean and tasted like the smell of really yummy roasted steak. It didn't give me heartburn nor did it give me that horrible I ate too much feeling.
I'm not PG, but I had to share that I love EK's Tex-Mex Wrap on Whole Wheat with Bison. The Ostrich is good, too, if you're looking for more protein and less fat. Also has a beefy texture that you describe for the bison, but not as strong a flavor.
Good luck in your final weeks!!
Denise
I'll have to see if I can find bison somewhere. Now I'm even more interested in what it might taste like. :)
