Bison

Quote  |  Reply

I don't really like red meat but for some reason I've been craving some steak all week. I don't want to eat a cow though cause I've come to love them as pets, so eating them is a big no-no. Ok blah, enough rambling! Can somebody please tell me what bison tastes like (like does it tastes "gamey"?) and is it really healthier than beef? Thanks!

Ok, your logic makes no sense, but whatever. Bison meat in general is leaner then cows milk. So I guess in that respect it is "healthier".

And why is that?

Cow is a pet, but bison is ok? I really don't see what the difference is. They are both domesticated animals at this point. Anyway a cooking tip for bison is to sear it on high first. This will lock in all the juices. Otherwise it will be very dry because of lower fat content.

Well, I wouldn't compare the two, but ok. Anyways, thanks for cooking tip.

I have ordered all of the following online:

  • elk
  • grass-fed beef
  • bison

All were quite good.  The grass-fed beef was by far the fattiest, but it supposedly had more Omega 3's.  I also liked the elk and the bison.  No matter how I fixed the bison: broiled steak, grilled steak, stir fry, bison burger, bison-vegetable soup, sloppy-Joe (yum-yum), it was always outstanding in taste, texture, and lack of fat.  Yes, some people do  not like it if the bison "dries out," but since I try to get rid of as much fat as I can out of any meat I cook, I even liked the taste of the bison when I didn't sear it, but just cooked it "straight up" so to speak.

Bison does not taste gamey.  It is not gamey like deer nor even as much as succulent lamb.

Thanks for the info pilmgrimdude.

Bison is delicious. We buy Bison steaks at the grocery on the sell-buy date, so they're half off, and keep them in the freezer. Cook them just like steak, med-rare to medium and they won't be dry. A four oz steak only has 160 cals. Worth it.

I've had bison burger and bison steaks. Both are excellent and not at all gamey. You might also try ostrich steaks - very tasty.

Depending upon where you live you may just find it in the grocery. Bison is in all of our stores. Ostrich not so much. I've ordered on line other foods before and it works great.

thatfatgirl:  First, I think of you of being thatsmartgirl.  Many well-wishes that you achieve all your goals.

Second, caiteliz014, I wish the Sam Hill I could buy half-off bison steaks!  I absolutely am a big believer in the healthy aspect of eating grass-fed bison; plus, it tastes so darn good.

Third, jannid, I may have to order ostrich on line (on line things are usually so expensive, but I am really curious about eating ostrich--I have read many good things about eating it).

I am a HUGE red meat eater but I will only eat grass-fed & grass-finished red meats... which include all of the following: Beef, Bison, Elk, Ostrich, Venison, Goat & Lamb.... Among the list is obviously bison, and let me just tell you, it's a definitely MUST EAT! You have to make sure you find grass-fed/finished bison though or else you really aren't getting anything nutritionally better for you than ground beef (corn fed)... So be sure to look at the labels carefully or simply order on line. I get all the above meat from NorthStarBison.com... I trust the woman who owns this farm 100000% - I have been ordering from her for YEARS and whenever we speak she always sounds so incredibly in love with what she is doing... Oh and did I mention the result of her hard work is ABSOLUTELY delicious! I eat her meats every single day for lunch and could NEVER get sick of the stuff!

I love that grass-fed/finished red meats are chalk full of omega-3 fatty acids & other nutrients that benefit all of us greatly! Healthy food can taste good!Sealed

PS: To all you who have yet to try ostrich: wow, you need to jump on that (the web site above sells it)... It's SO delicious, I cannot even describe the taste because it's so unique!

That is way too expensive. I guess I'll stick with my run of the meal bison patties from TJ.

I personally find Bison meat to be particularly gamy. The best tasting, leanest meat is definitely Caribou. If you can get your hands on some, you will definitely appreciate it!

I'm not a big red meat eater but I love bison 100% more than steak. It's so delicious and much more lean.

Bison is wonderful. Lately, I've been cooking it up, adding veggies a half a packet of taco seasoning, and eating in a whole wheat tortilla, with shredded cheese.

Delicious.

Any meat is only has healthy as what the animal ate while it was alive.

The kids and I love Bison. I buy the grass fed ground Bison. I fry up some tasty hamburgers with it. Just a touch of Season All and perfecto! It's a slightly sweeter taste than Moo-Cow. I just fry it up on the the stove top and use a lid to keep the meat from drying out. You just need to make sure that you cook it at a lower temp for a little bit of a longer time. I haven't tried the steaks yet. That will be next on my list. :)

I can't find bison meat anywhere so I think I'm going to have to order it online, but not today cause I'm broke. Oh well. I already lost my craving for steak.

GOOOOOO BISON!!!

I mean....Bison meat is great Smile

I've never actually cooked it, but I used to order it back at school.  There was always a bison special somewhere!
