bisphenol-A a "dangerous substance"

Quote  |  Reply
Health Canada is expected to declare BPA a dangerous substance later today.  some prominent canadian retailers took water bottles containing BPA off the shelves several months ago.  BPA has been linked to certain cancers as well as ADHD, and is a common ingredient in the hard plastic of baby bottles as well as drinking water bottles.

so, what will you do with your nalgene?

DOH!

wow, what next?!

bottled water is no good, nalgenes are no good!

guess i'll just go back to drinking straight from the garden hose like i did when i was a kid...

Is there any substance left that hasn't been linked to ADHD?

Damn!!!

there are lots of them, sully, but most aren't a major ingredient in baby bottles.

Bootled water is unregulated well water, mostly and in addition to being no better than water from the tap run through a decent filter, the damn plastic bottles are not truly recyclable and are an ecological nightmare.

I use a filter and put some water in a Thermos.  Why is this so hard for so many people?

ugh.

camelbak makes a bpa-free alternative.  also sigg makes coated aluminum bottles that keep your drink cold longer (and the dents look cool).

pg, my Whole Foods sells those sigg bottles, I might have to treat myself today... I was eyeing a cute one with a 1950's style rocket ship on it.

I have a sigg bottle that I love - it seems to keep the water cold longer, and I don't get weird looks at work if I put protein powder in my water bottle and people wonder what the heck kind of muck I'm drinking.

And before we go off the deep end about aluminum and Alzheimer's disease, sigg coats the inside of the bottle (hopefully not with BPA...). And there's no higher incidence of AD in the swiss army, which supposedly carried canteens made using the same process as sigg bottles. That's what the tag says...

What does Switzerland need an army for anyway? Aren't they always neutral? They sure have cool toys (army knife, watches, siggs...).

i love my sigg.  it's a red 0.6 liter (i think i need a bigger one, too) and i've put stickers on it.  it wobbles because i've dropped it so many times, and it has lots of dents, and it's supercool.  i have ice cube trays that make tiny cubes that fit through the mouth.  the only thing is, because of the stickers i can't put it in the dishwasher.  if i get another one, i might have to find a new way to adorn it.
those sigg bottles look awesome! anyone know where else you can buy em?
i got mine at the UBC bookstore (vancouver), but i don't suppose that's much help to you, jules.
This gets me pissed. I have been eating real food and drinking out of glass things since forever. Ive always been made fun of for it. Now they're being all preachy and telling me what to do.

edit: *hugs udokier* lol XD
who are you mad at, reila?  i'm pretty sure that the scientists who are warning about BPA are not the same people who've been making fun of you.
ADHD - I think comes from our INSTANT everything lifestyle & entertainment than anything else.
then shouldn't everybody have it, trainwreck?

From the article pgeorgian linked:

"Recent research has shown that bisphenol A is an estrogenic hormone disrupter that causes reproductive damage and may lead to prostate and breast cancer in adulthood. Babies, in particular, are particularly vulnerable, since traditional plastic baby bottles contain bisphenol A."

What this article, as well as all the other news reports I've heard about this the last couple of days, left out is how large of a dose is supposed to cause these problems and if there is any way of getting a dose that high from drinking out of a bottle made with this chemical.  Without this information it can not be determined if this chemical poses a significant risk or if these reports are just more fear-mongering by the media.

Who am I mad at? The people that made fun of me and those who agreed with them. Anyway, I'm not saying I'm better than anyone else(Ive been lucky to have the oppurtunity to learn), just that its quite nauseating to see some so shocked at the concept that plastic and microwaves are bad for them....at least this information is getting out there *fakes optimism*

Have you ever met someone who thought they had it and had a doctor tell them they didn't?

I think part of the reason there is so much hyperactivity is we want things so instantly. There is no patience anymore. A surprising amount of children my age think they are going to be famous someday. :/

Probably because there's a growing chance they will be - at least for a very brief period of time, in a particular circle or society.  Heck, all a person has to do today is be a bad singer in a talent show, a jerk on a contrived game show, or cry about Britney Spears on YouTube.

Warhol wasn't joking about the "15 minutes."

I agree with you about most young people not having any patience.  It seems if they have to wait longer than 5 minutes for a sandwich, they think they're going to miss something.
