Bizzare food question...
I was reading about some of the world's nastiest/wierdest foods, and I came to a page about black pudding, or "blood sausage". Sounds gross, no? Well it's a traditional breakfast item in England apparently; made from pig or cow blood, mixed with seasonings and some type of filler (fat, bread, etc.). I've also seen something similar to it on the Travel Channel show "Bizzare Foods".
Out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea of how many calories a slice of this would typically have? I'd have no idea how to figure the calories in cow blood...=/

ew :/
are you uh, planning on eating some?

one slice, or 25 grams, would have 95 calories.
I don't know, but me and my family were talking about a European vacation... xD
I doubt I'd eat it; too fattening most likley. But I can't say I'd be afraid to try it for any other reason really.
95 cals? Hmmm...not bad for sausage I suppose; just depends on how big the slice is and how much you actually get for the weight.

blood is great for you. it has tons of iron. The Chinese gelatinize blood and serve it with their vegetables. It's quite good. Also, the Siberians and indiginous people of the far far north sometimes drink blood because it's so hard for them to get iron and other minerals and vitamins in their regular diet.
Hahaha I find it so bizarre that you find it odd. For me and I suspect about 95% of British people, the good old black pudding as we call it is renowned and well-known. You wouldn't be able to go into a butchers without a blood sausage in amongst the other meats and if you ordered a full English breakfast in a cafe or pub you would 9 times out of 10 get a slice with you beans, egg, sausage and bacon.
xD Seriously Rastnim? That's...umm...awesome. Heheh. Hopefully I can come check out London when I go on vacation later this year; I've always been England to be very interesting and it sounds like a nice place to visit.
Feddiechick, that is quite bizzare about the Chinese however, though I suppose it's quite smart, since blood actually is good for you. And wow, have you tried it?

i've tried a filipino dish called 'dinuguan' (aka blood stew). i didn't care for it (it was way too salty). but i figure: life's too short not to try a bit of everything when the opportunity arises!
I love trying new foods! Now I want to try this sausage.
Yeah, I've had the gelatinized blood before. At first I whined and complained about it, but my husband nagged me and I tried it. I can't say I like it on its own, but I don't hate it. It doesn't taste gross or anything. Too salty, I guess, like I imagine the Filipino dish might taste. With a lot of steamed greens, though, it's rather tasty.

I have no idea about calories in it but I'm British and I wouldn't touch the stuff. It may say it's traditional...and I spose it might have been once...but it's not hugely common. And I dissagree that you would get it if you ordered a full english brekfast. Did it say anything about a Scottish dish called Haggis? That's another strange one.
I second the haggis mention. Very very odd. Sausage as a general rule doesn't tend to be very low in calories, so I'd probably stay away from it. And you definitely wouldn't get it with a traditional English breakfast.
wtf? why would you want to eat that? i literally almost threw up from reading that lol :(
as far as logging goes, i would just forgo it completely, since you said you'd be on vacation why bother? vacations should be just about having fun and enjoying different thing, not having to worry about logging everything you eat.
Guess it just depends on what you grow up with and how open minded you are.
Lots of western foods are just processed animal parts thrown into a grinder and put into an artificial shell with fake colors and flavors, or loaded with high fructose corn syrup which isn't good for you at all, or perservatives or fake dies or a ton of salt or made from pure sugar and deep fried.
Some people might think that's just as gross as eating tripe or bugs or monkey or live eel or fish eggs or eyeballs in one's rice.
(Mexico, Africa, south east Asia, Russia and the middle east)
Who knows. You might like it.

I had the pleasure of trying blood sausage in Ireland--it was always for breakfast. I liked it for the first couple of days, then someone told me what it was and I couldn't eat it anymore! I know that makes me a huge wimp, but what can you do?
At least it's animal blood...
I wouldn't expect England to go all cannibal on us. ![]()
