Bland Foods to Help With Food Poisoning?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I got a really bad bout of food poisoning or the stomach flu (fever, chills, diarrea, and throwing up all night) I'm feeling a little better today but I think my stomach can only take bland foods and I need suggestions. Also, if I'm not lactose intolerant, would milk be ok? what about minestrone soup? I heard that tomato broth was bad for upset stomachs but its the only type of soup we have. thanks

Try the BRAT diet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRAT_diet

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Applesauce
  • Toast

Hope you feel better soon!

Saltine crackers. Only real thing I could keep down when I got a pretty bad food poisoning.

thanks, and just a suggestion, minestrone soups is a REALLY BAD idea. i had stomach cramps for 2 hours after that...i think ill stick with saltines and toast for now

My old family doctor would put us on this regimen when we had severe digestive upsets of any kind.  It was to prevent dehydration.

First four hours - clear liquids, sipped slowly.  He swore by warm, flat ginger ale and apple juice, any temperature) Drink as much as you can, but slowly and only an ounce or two at at time.  If you can get Coke syrup from the drug store a teaspoon of that helps.

If that stays down after the four hours are up, then add a couple of tablespoons of applesauce and wait 20 minutes.  If that stays down, add more applesauce, eaten very slowly, and continue to take clear liquids.

After 6 hours, add dry toast and warm chicken broth

After 8 hours, have "milque toast" which is just lightly buttered toast, cut in cubes, soaked in warm milk.  It's surprisingly comforting even though it sounds yucky.

The next step is chicken broth with soft rice, all you want.  By that time you should be feeling much better.

If at any point there is vomiting, start over.

I remember telling my mom I had a stomach ache so she would give my some Coke syrup over ice!

For upset/nauseus stomachs try sipping clear liquids and nibble saltines.  Later on PB on toast with tea always does the trick for me.

thanks everyone for the suggestions! May I also suggest that if you love a food that is unhealthy/bad to try and eat it when you have the stomach flu? Completely turns you off the food for a while.
