Bleached/Enriched Bread AKA White Bread

Quote  |  Reply

Seriously...will it really kill my weight loss if I eat it regularly? My family always brings warm French Bread to our house from the store and its so hard to resist it when its right there in front of me...

I know its bad...but will it that bad?? As long as I eat within my calorie numbers, its ok, right? RIGHT?! ;_;

I often eat a white breakfast roll for breakfast. It hasn't hold ma' weight loss back.

Though I THINK wholegrain bread is better for you, and I dont even taste any difference in them.

I believe the difference is that refined grains cause spikes in blood sugars, and contain less fibre. As such they give less of a feeling of satiety. Also, due to their bleaching and refining many of the nutrients are removed from the final product and tend to be added back in, making them nutritionally inferior. You can enjoy them, but you would garner better benefits from wholegrains.

Thats funny... You see, a slice of rye bread doesn't keep me satisfied any longer than a slice of killed (refined white) bread... Same goes with cereal and porridge. In fact, porridge makes me hungry but cereal keeps me satisfied.

Is it just me or am I strange...? O.O'

The French are a notably slender race.... and they eat French bread every day.  No wonder, it's lovely stuff!   If your diet is well-balanced and you're not eating too much in total you'll control your weight.  There are no bad foods.  Only bad diets.

Ieevee: It does also depend somewhat on what you are eating the carbohydrate with. A bowl of cereal with milk (protein) will keep you fuller than a bowl of porridge with water - though if you make the porridge with milk then it's probably just a personal thing! I find porridge keeps me much more satisfied than a bowl of cereal. There is, as aforementioned, a great deal more nutrition to be considered in wholegrains too, but a bit of both doesn't hurt if you prefer it that way and it works for you.

Whole grains aren't any better for you or your blood sugar.  Have a nice slice of bread.  Put a little butter on it too and make it the carb part of a meal and you shouldnt have a problem.

Omg warm french bread is the worstt! whenever my mom comes home with some i practicly run and jam in the freeze to prevent me from eating it. but then my mom gets angry cuz she says she got the warm one on purpose so we could enjoy it fresh, so i give her an innocent face and say i was only trying to help perserve the freshnessssFrown.

hah works everytime Wink

But ya i feel the only problem with white bread is that it never gets me full, i could eat an entire loaf of white toast and still have room for more, plus white bread makes me more bloated then soda so i try to avoid it as much as possible, but i don't think it interfers with your wieght loss at all

Hello Marneedear, but whole grains really are better for a person.  Their fiber content helps keep you full and your digestive system functioning, and their nutritional content is off the charts: iron, B-vitamins, antioxidants...

I'm not saying one shouldn't eat white bread, it's just good to balance it with whole grains.  I did that for a long time, and at this point white bread simply isn't worth the empty calories anymore, and so I only eat whole grains.  I find that once you get accustomed to their taste and texture, which really are different, you think of bread differently than before: instead of being a side dish or an addition to a meal, it's part of the meal's fundamental composition.

Marneedear: Wholegrains, as low GI foods, release energy slowly and help with insulin levels. This is why they are often recommended for type 2 diabetics. There is a lovely article Here that discusses health benefits of wholegrains with links to the studies done. I do think it is good to have a balance of white and whole if you want it, but am personally a fan of wholegrains over refined. Refined grains never keep me full - in fact, they tend to, ah, "empty me out" if you catch my drift. =__= But for people without that problem it's fine to eat a bit of white in your diet. I just wouldn't recommend eating only refined carbohydrates.
