Why do I bloat when I eat high fiber food?
Asked by anonymous on Mar 15, 2009 in Health Conditions

My mom bought these high fiber energy bars that she is using to help her digestive system.  How come every time I eat one I bloat?  It's really frustrating.

Answer

Assuming that the bloating only happens when you eat your mom's high fiber energy bars, it may be due to either sugar alcohols or to a large amount of cellulose and other fibers in the bar.  If the bar contains sugar alcohols, they will be listed on the Nutrition Facts label and you can avoid them.  But if high fiber ingredients are behind the problem, take Beano® when you begin to eat a bar.  Beano is an over-the-counter natural food enzyme that digests complex fibers to prevent gas.  Your ability to digest complex fibers may improve if you repeatedly eat those energy bars over time.
