How can get my blood sugar down to normal?

My blood sugar level is 169  and my doctor said that if I don't lower it in 3 months, he will have to put me on medication.  I hate taking meds. I've heard avoiding carbs is a good choice but unfortunately I enjoy my bread, pasta, rice and potatoes and cereals. I don't over do with these things but I certainly know I can't give them up completely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Limit your carbohydrate intake to 180 grams a day spread evenly into three meals.
