OK, I've lost quite a bit of weight going the low sugar / sugar free route, because these foods are so low in calories (sometimes).  However, there are days that my blood sugar gets so low that I'm forced to have an extremely sugary snack or a regular pop to stop the shakes.

I was wondering if there was perhaps a better option than low sugar / sugar free?

Fruit :-)  Any type of really sweet fruit should give you a bit of an energy boost and still be healthy.  Oranges are a good choice.
I would also try and get a good balance between carbohydrates and protein with your meals to help keep you fueled for the short and long term (about a 2:1 ratio).
Are you sure your blood sugar is low because you're eating too little refined sugar?

How much protein do you get per day?

My fiancee is hypoglycemic and we've been told that she actually needs to up her daily protein, not her daily refined sugars. Refined sugar will give you a sugar spike, sure, but it won't last long and then you drop like a barrel over Niagara Falls, if'n you know what I mean :)

Try to eat more foods with a high Glycemic Index value, foods that not only will fill you up, but will last a while in your stomach and keep your blood sugar more or less the same :)
Hmm, I hadn't thought about that ... my protein usually IS pretty low, actually.
Yep. I agree. A good quality protein helps to keep blood sugar in balance, which in turn helps to control cravings. There are nutrients and herbs that help as well.

That will just cause the problem to reoccur again a little while later. You should not wait until you get the shakes to eat. Test your blood sugar if you need to, and eat more often. Also, do not eat carbs by themselves, but instead combine them with fats and proteins, and this will cause blood sugar to come down slower instead of getting really high, followed by becoming really low.
