Blood Type vs. Weight Loss

Quote  |  Reply

I was just curious if anyone here has had their blood workup done to test what kinds of foods and nutrients are or are not good for their body type. I have a friend who had this done and he was advised his blood identified certain foods he should not eat. He has consistently lost weight since removing these "fat" foods from his diet.

If someone has done this, please explain the process and your diet adjustments and success or lack thereof.

I've heard of this method, but I have my doubts.   Basically, weight loss comes down to calories in versus calories out.  I'm guessing that your friend was told to remove some high fat foods and he ended up losing weight because the high fat foods tend to have alot of calories.  Therefore, he ended up consuming less calories.  Eating less calories is the key to weight loss.  This is all you really need to be successfull.

A hypochondriac friend of mine did this.... got given a huge great list of seemingly random foods to avoid ranging from coffee to garlic to bread.  Of course, by limiting her food choices, she ate less.   After a few weeks she looked quite pale and felt ill.  Not quite the effect she'd hoped for.

A few weeks later on we read an article in a magazine.  A reporter went to several clinics offering this blood-testing service and each one told her to avoid a completely different list of foods.   After reading this, my friend ceremonially shredded her list of foods and went back to the garlic bread!!

I have had my blood tested but not like that...normal liver panel etc but never to identify certain foods

This sounds like quack science to me. However, I have heard some doctors talk about food allergies affecting weight loss. I know someone who was tested for food allergies and given a list of things to avoid eating because it would cause inflammation or fluid retention, or something like that... but that sounds a lot different than what you're talking about.

This is a site about a book that Dr. D'Adamos has written called Eat Right For Your Blood Type. I have read alot and checked out the lists of foods that are both good for you and the foods to avoid. I have RA and Fibromyalgia, both causing inflammation, and I found that if I avoid the foods that are on the avoid list for type O positive, I don't have as many flare ups. I don't believe everything I read, but am willing to try things that will help me naturally instead of taking meds.

My brother is a naturopath and swears by this diet.  When I had my work up done he suggested that I eat a lot of meat and to stay away from carbs.  Well, I did eat a lot of meat but I couldn't give up the carbs.  However, I did manage to lose 175 pounds - in one year - without giving up carbs.  I just cut the calories and worked out A LOT!!!

I think the Eat Right for Your Type books do make some sense, but I don't buy into all of it 100%. As another poster noted, it makes sense to read it and try a few things -- no harm there. I'm type B and have an aversion to chicken and eggs -- I was interested to see that this book advises against type Bs eating chicken and eggs. However, I have not found a strong correlation for vegetarian - type A and carnivore - type O ness. Some people do follow this, some people don't.

But it does work as a guide/plan for some people, so it's not total malarkey. Worth a shot!

It is a shame Fibromyalgia is not as popular in medicine as some of the other human ailments. My mother has it and until just recently, no one even really talked about it. At least now science is making an effort to learn more about this debilitating disease. Good Luck
