Blue fingernails (still!)

Quote  |  Reply

I'm recovered/recovering from anorexia, and have been at a healthy weight for about a month now. Anyway, I've noticed that my nails are still blue (they have a blue tinge from the bottom to about halfway up). I assumed this was because of my anorexia and thought when I started to eat more it would go away, but it hasn't. However, my hair has stopped falling out and is getting thicker again (yay!). Does anyone know when the blue tinge will go away? I'm tired of painting my nails!

I'bd be inclined ot visit  a physician it could be a sign of circulatory problems.

Yeah, I was worried about that. I did speak to my Doctor about it but she didn't seem too concerned. I've had regular blood tests and ECGs and they've all been fine.

WOw, someone else with that problem. When i was underweight my fingnails would turn blue after I ate a meal. Are yours blue all the time or just as certain times?

I get that too when I am cold.  I don't have an eating disorder, nor am I underweight.  I do have poor circulation though.  My doc told me to exercise for that.  You might need to strengthen your heart.  When you lose muscle, you lose muscle everywhere, and your heart is a muscle.  Maybe that is part of it?  Congrats on your recovery.

I assume it's not this bad! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raynaud%27s_phen omenon Laughing That would be scary.

Your circulation can be 'normal' and still bad enough to cause slightly low oxygen levels (that's what the blue is) or you could be anemic?

Building some muscle would help bad circulation.

Wow! No, it's not that bad.

I don't think I'm anemic. I started weight training a few weeks ago so hopefully that will help :) Thanks!

My nails used to get super blue/gray when I sat around at my desk job and I felt constantly cold. Once I started exercising it went away. If you get up, and shake your hands around to get the blood circulating again that should help. I wouldn't worry yourself sick about it. Def ask a doctor, but Raynaud's is unlikely considering your past and all. Just get your blood flowin ;)

I have the same problem. I have very poor circulation in both my fingers and toes. My doctor says that it is likely mild Raynaud's (though not as horrible looking as in the link vwiggins posted!). Exercising helps, or anything to keep your fingers warmer (like gloves, holding a warm mug of hot cocoa/tea).

My fingers weren't weird until I developed anorexia, and even though I have been eating normally for about two years, they are still blue when I am anything but very warm. I think it's sort of the price to pay for hurting my body :(

Obviously I'm not a doctor, but in my opinion, unless it's painful or otherwise damaging, a doctor is probably not necessary.

I've been in the same position as you, and my nails still have a blue tint from time to time (it happens really randomly). Plus my hands are almost ALWAYS cold, but it's been like that my whole life (even before ED). I've had the blood tests & EKG as well, and everything came back normal. My doctor referred me to a specialized type of doctor (can't remember the technical name though, gah), but I have yet to make an appointment since it isn't causing any real problems. I've just gotten used to it. But I'd go with the other advice, start moving around and see if it makes a difference, otherwise you could ask your doctor (though seeing mine didn't really change much).
