What do you mean by 'BMI'?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 18, 2008 in Weight Loss

Answer

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of weight proportionate to height.  It gives a general indication of whether an individual's weight falls within a healthy range.  The number is derived by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of the person's height in meters, and is plotted on a graft and interpreted as follows:

  • BMI < 18.5: Underweight
  • BMI 18.5 – 24.9: Adequate weight
  • BMI 25 – 29.9: Overweight
  • BMI 30 – 39.9: Obese
  • BMI > 40: Extreme obesity
