The BMI Visual Graph

Quote  |  Reply

I thought this was rather interesting as a representation of how we may look to others at varying BMIs.

Obviously, as we all know, BMI is not a perfect indicator of health, fitness, body fat, etc.  It can especially be misleading with muscular people.  But I do hope some of the younger folks who come on here saying "My BMI is 18 (or 16) but I'm petite - I look just fine at this weight"  or  "My BMI is 18, but I just want to lose 3 more lbs."

Please look at the graphic of the people at 17 BMI and realize that although you may THINK you look okay in the mirror, the odds are that all the people around you see you like this - gaunt and wasted away.

I'm at 22 now, and my goal weight would put my right about 21.

Thanks for the link. That's really neat. I'm also at 22ish and I definitely feel fatter than how the image looks.

This reminds me of this chart http://www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightw eight.shtml

some people on the chart have bmi's of 17 and look fine, others have lower or much higher bmi's and still look fine, Mines 17.5 and I've received no complaints from doctors or others at this weight,

If I remember, you're an extremely thin teenage boy who has some very ED-like ideas about food and weight.

I'm going to gain fat I can tell, and I haven't eaten dinner the number is so high I'm so depressed I've immediately gained 7lbs from the shear volume of the food and I'm so bloated I cant exercise exercise, I just feel like reaching for the mini croissants and gorging even more, perhaps I should just purge it then I'd feel better?

the whole event has made me realize if I'm not thin I have nothing, I'm not worth anything if I'm fat and no one wants to look at me in this state, I'm recovering now but I still feel awful because of the lack of support from my parents, they just say I'm depressed because I dont do enough exercise

You said (with tears in your eyes in your posted photo at the time) your BMI was 18.8 then, but that you had "rolls of fat".

Sorry, but I have to take your comments on this with a grain of salt.  I don't think many people - especially teen boys -are healthy at 17.5 BMI.  You said you were recovering then and going to seek counseling.  Did you?  Why do I get the strong feeling you are glossing over an awful lot when you say that nobody has a problem with your extremely low weight?

Why are you even posting on this thread?  Seems to me that a part of you knows that  17.5 is too low.

thanks for this.  i used to have a bmi of 22.5 and now i'm down to 20.5.  I'm aiming for 20.  to be honest i think that still looks good.  and anything down to 18/19 is healthy right?  the first one really is too thin though.

I actually take my comments with a grain of salt as well, sometimes I come back to see what I've written and cant believe I wrote it,

I quickly found out that the treatment for non urgent cases is a joke its a waste of time and stressful because its ineffective, as long as I'm physically sound I'm of no concern and theres nothing to treat, and I'm not glossing over anything I eat freely and with clothes I look completely fine, I agree with you though 17.5 is to low for me I think 18.8 is to low as well, I'm large framed so I should weigh somewhere in the 60's but I'm not fainting or anemic so all appears well,

I also think that if someone were to go from a normal weight or overweight to bmi of 17 people would notice more and think they were sick but because I've always been like this I just look slim,

Its better just to accept it and move on because no one treats you seriously if you tell anyone because unless your a complete skeleton's no one believes you, .

ah, crap.

my BMI isn't even on the chart.

I'm pretty short though,

so I don't look lanky.

this visual graph is interesting but kinda bugs me. i am overweight...yes, that's true. i mean--my BMI is nearly 40 :(

BUT this is the thing...i swear to you that i look more like a 29 and maybe a 33. it's like a 33 with a 29 tummy haha.

udokier, you'd said it might throw people off because different muscle compositions and whatnot. and i dunno the deal for me.

but i think i'm lucky the way the weight (which i am losing!) is distributed on my body because it doesn't settle on my stomach much. so i dunno, it's weird to look at! i know i have to lose weight but this graph is just really throwing me off.

maybe if they had different visual graphs for different body types, it might look more accurate for me...thanks for sharing! :)
