Hey there all you Calorie Counters!
I've heard a lot about BMR and RMR and how you can find out what your BMR is by taking a really quick test. I was just wondering where you can get that kind of thing done. I live in NYC, so if anyone could tell me where there is a place in the city where I could have that test, that would be wonderful. I just want to see if my burn meter is right.
Thanks in advance!

I'm 95% sure all Bally gym locations do them. I've heard of some hospitals doing them as well.
Oh, ok. Stellar. I'll call a local Bally or something tomorrow. Thanks! :)
If you have a Lifetime Fitness in NY they do the testing. It is a national chain and the test is $99.00. I had it done and it takes about 1/2 hour and is nothing more than sitting in a dark quiet room thinking happy thoughts while you are hooked up to monitors. Then you answer a few questions, they plug it all into the computer and you get the results. The other half of the testing though is to put you on a treadmil and they control it until you are breathless. You wear a mask to monitor how efficiently you burn O2.
The 2nd test is a map test and tells you at what point you are burning sugar instead of fat. This test together with the RMR will tell you exactly what the minimum calorie intake is to lose weight and the max you can have before you store the fat. It will also tell you where you should have your heart rate in order to burn fat instead of sugar.
If you are eating the minimum caloric intake you have to replace what you burn off or will not lose the weight.
I find it all very interesting. Also by working out correctly at the right heart rate for your own body, you will burn the fat longer.

A bit off subject, but... There is no magical zone where you burn just fat. It's a continuous spectrum as you go from aerobic to anaerobic intensity. At higher intensity of exercise you do burn higher percentage of calories from stored sugar, but overall you burn more calories. Plus that sugar needs to be replaced, so part of the calories you consume afterwards go towards that task. As a bonus high intensity exercise boosts your metabolism slightly. Problem is high intensity exercise is hard to do for prolonged periods of time/often. So it's a trade off depending on how much time is available, goals, frequency of exercise.
