Caliper tests are extremely easy to do, are inexpensive, and are quite accurate. I had mine tested yesterday and it was within .5% of my confirmed level.

Search for Accumeasure on google. Their calipers are extremely cheap and are great for measuring BF%.

thank you

Cookk -- Thanks for the website!!  I just clicked on it and measured my body fat %.  It is 22.1%.  I don't really know much about body fat %.....is this an okay number?  My stats are: 5'4'' and 134ish.  I workout pretty often (although less in the last few weeks).  Do you have an idea of where my % should be?  Thanks!

http://www.healthchecksystems.com/bodyfat.htm   This site has a chart but to save you the trouble you are in the fitness level with the 22%.  Basically it works like this at 134 lbs you have 30 lbs of fat in your body and 104 lbs of muscle, bone, organs etc.  As a female you need more fat to survive of that 22 % fat 10-12 % is essential.  So you have say 15lbs of fat to lose before you start digging into the essential fat.  Use this site for as a good reference tool, if BF is some thing you are truly interested ask your doctor about some recommendation of place to have it done.  Hope this helps! :)

thank you so much! i'll def check out the website and will prob talk to my doctor next time i see her. Smile

This one is pretty good too and came recommended by Melkor here on the forums as a good ballpark to use.

Sites like this are useful but caliper-based bodyfat tests are far more reliable and accurate.

My personal favorite:http://www.linear-software.com/online.html

The Durnin/Womersley equation is the most accurate. It is used at bodybuilding competitions to measure the bodyfat levels of pro bodybuilders, thus I tend to trust it. It put my BF% at 7.5%, which, looking at me, is quite accurate.

Yeah - the tape-measure based ones are less reliable than the caliper-based ones; a caliper test administered by an experienced practicioner can be accurate to within half a percentage point of a DEXA scan.

The Covert Bailey test tends to track impedance tests to within 1-3%, which is better by far than the Navy and YMCA version but not terribly accurate, so it's mostly useful for establishing a trend line. Caliper tests are generally better, but people don't tend to have those around the house :)
I went to the gym today and had a body fat and BMI test done. I had to hold this Sonic Control Player-looking device out in front of me and it measured it using an electric current sent through my body. It turned out I have 7% body fat. Is this a reliable test?

Sorry to say those are just about the least accurate. A bodybuilding friend of mine had his bodyfat tested with one of those and it said he had 31%. He's more like 8%.

I'll get a pinch test today. I couldn't believe the 7%...that's deathly thin, and I'm still getting my period.
