Body fat scales

Quote  |  Reply
Does anyone else have the salter body fat scales. Mine seem to be a little wrong and im trying to work out if this is normal.

When i started i was 140lbs with 24.8%BF, 32.6%Muscle and 52.8% H2Owhich according to my maths that makes me 110% not including bones etc.

Now im 133lbs and 23%BF, 36%M and 55%H20 which = 114%.

How can i possibly be more than 100%, and that should include my bones. Im pretty dam good at maths and whilst i know i weight 114% of what i want to weight theres no way my scales could know that. Whats going on? They cant be broken as theyve been the same since i bought them a few months ago

I don't have one but I read an article by a personal trainer saying those body fat scales are not accurate at all and a complete waste of money. The only way to have your body fat measured is by having a professional(Nutritionist or personal trainer) use the clamps or better yet, the most accurate is when they submerge you underwater. Sorry about your scale but if it's not too late just return it--they are expensive and not accurate.
they are accurate in that they seem to go up and down as much as they ought to. Ive lost weight and fat and gained muscle so at least the numbers are showing the right directions.

chelseagirl, the 3 categories aren't mutually exclusive, and that's why they add to more than 100%.  Human muscle is in fact 70-75% water, and human fat is 10-15% water.  The total H20 measure includes some of your muscle weight and some of your fat weight accordingly.

It may help to clarify by considering an impossible extreme:  suppose you were 100% muscle, and had no other tissue of any kind.  Then you would have 0% BF, 100% Muscle, and somewhere from 70-75% H20.

tgpish - thats the perfect answer. I knew they werent broken i love my scales and would never be parted from them. The fact that they change only a little day-to-day suggests that they are accurate. At the moment the fat is going down and muscle and water are going up so im very happy with with what they are displaying.
