Where can I have my body fat tested?
Asked by dianagstipe on Apr 17, 2009 in Weight Maintenance

Which health professional in my HMO can test my body fat percentage?  I am a retired RD who needs a personal nutritionist to add to my information about healthy aging.

Answer

Body composition analysis is usually performed by an exercise specialist.  Look to hospitals and university medical centers in the Sports Medicine or Cardiac Rehab Departments and to Exercise Physiology Departments in colleges and universities.  Reputable health clubs, such as the YMCA, offer body composition analysis, as do HMO's at community events.  Body composition analysis shows what percentage of weight is made up of fat, muscle and water.  It can be measured by several methods, including skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance, underwater weighting, and DEXA x-ray.
