Why do I still have body image issues after I have lost weight?
Asked by choosehappiness on Jan 14, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I lost 50 pounds and people tell me I look great, but, when I look in the mirror I still see the same overweight person.  I am just as dissatisfied with my stomach as I was when I was 180 pounds. How can I change my body image and why can't I see the changes?

Answer

Body image is the way you feel about your personal appearance.  For many people, body image is linked to self-esteem, the satisfaction a person has with himself.  To change your body image, focus on your attributes and the good things that you do everyday.  Surround yourself with loving people and do not compare yourself to Photoshopped images of women in the media. Understand how hurtful comments from the past influence you today.  Listen for your own negative comments and tell yourself to stop!  If you cannot build your self-esteem on your own, get help from a licensed therapist.  Don't let body image issues steal the joy in life.
