Can I boil the sodium out of meat?
Asked by naturalchick on Apr 20, 2009 in Nutrition

For example, can I boil turkey bacon to lower the sodium?

Answer

It is better to buy low sodium processed meats because meat loses only a negligible amount of sodium in boiling.  When boiled in clear water, vegetables lose about 20% of their sodium, but they lose other nutrients as well.  To boil away the most salt, use a lot of water, cook a long time and change the water mid-way. You can also reduce sodium is by rinsing food.  A Duke University study showed that when rinsed one minute under tap water, sodium was reduced by 76% in canned tuna, 56% in cottage cheese, and 41% in canned vegetables.   Read more tips for lowering your salt intake at About.com.
