How about The EatingWell Diet?  It is a research-based approach to healthy eating and healthy weight maintenance.  It is not trendy or fad-oriented, just good sense about nutrition and how food and your body work together.  It also has some great recipes in it.

You will notice that many of the things in the book are compatible with CC, for example it strongly encourages keeping a food log.  In my opinion it is one of the best diet/healthy living books available because the information is good and research-based and it is very accessible.

'Ultimate Food for Ultimate Health and Dont forget the chocolate' - Liz Pearson and Mairlyn Smith.

This book is my bible and if my house was burning down I would grab this over anything else. its written by two great ladies one is a nutritionist who uses half the book to talk about foods and what foods are best for you and what fights all different diseases. and the other half is written by a chef who takes all of what the nutritionist has said and puts it into every day recipes. I have about 10 of her dishes a week they are so easy, I made her brocoli and cheese soup at the weekend 190 cals and it was so filling I could not finish it!! This is not a faddy diet book either, more of a education into eating and living well.

A definate must for anyone trying to educate themselves on eating healthy.

 man, you've got me interested!

Good, this book is awesome!!! Its a Canadian book so you may have to order it, but they have it on Amazon. its the best $20 I have ever spent! mine is all tattered with post it notes hanging out from my fav recipes and there are splatter marks all over it LOL. I have made a lot of her recipes and I can safely say that I didnt muck it up, they were not really complicated, and not one of them I didnt like to eat.

I was really craving a double choc chip muffin a couple of weeks back and the starbucks ones are 520 cals with 21 grams of fat, I went home got out the book, and hey presto there was a recipe for double choc chip muffins, 190 cals and 4 grams of fat, plus an added bonus of 4 grams of fibre!!! and you would not know the difference, tottally gave me my craving satisfaction!!

I even sent a copy to my Mum and my Nan for Christmas LOL

lots of good ones out there, the one that changed the way i fuel my body was

In Defense of Food is awesome. Check it out. The line on the cover "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants" sums it up pretty well.

Oooh, I read an interview with that guy.  I love the tag line for his book!

"150 healthiest foods on Earth" by Jonny Bowden
It has a lot of foods that you have forgotten about, and tells you the benefits of each food listed and it makes you want to try new foods. At least it did for me, I have tried veggys that I never knew about or thought I would like. Its a great way of learning about the benefits of healthy food.

"Small changes, big results: a 12 week action plan" by Ellie Krieger
You might have seen her on the food network but this book is great for ideas and info on exercising and dieting. I dont follow the plan but its great for learning about how you should be eating and exercising. It says not to eat any cakes or anything, which i disagree with cause i think its okay if you eat it in moderation. That is the only thing i disagree with in the book.

If you have a local library I would just rent out the books instead of buying them and reading as many as possible so you learn more. thats what i have been doing.

Chantel Hobbs book 'Never Say Diet'. She lost 200 lbs in 2 years by just eating healthy and exercising. No gimmicks- and very good advice. This book has been a real motivator for me. Laughing

The Body Sculpting Bible Express for Women
by James Villepigue (Author), Hugo Rivera (Author)

I recently bought this book and was instantly impressed. They thoroughly explain everything, the different diets and fads, exercises and food.

My main reason for buying it was because I wanted workouts I could do at home and they have workout regimes at the end of the book which are easy to follow, with pictures too.

I think it's also good if you're just wanting to learn to eat properly rather than do extreme dieting.

you can also look into text books, they will have a lot more factual information.
I don't know if there's any reason to believe a book from a reputable source that is targeted towards consumers instead of students isn't factual.
By far the greatest "non-diet" diet book I've ever read is called French Women Don't Get Fat.  It's written by a French woman who came to the U.S. as an exchange student when she was in high school and came back fat.  She didn't understand why.... then she looks at some of the cultural and gastronomic differences.  It's really interesting.  It explains how the French really eat and how they're able to have five-course dinners and stay thin.  It totally changed the way I look at food.  Plus, it's cute, funny, and stylish.  Very entertaining.  What I really appreciated about it is that the author stressed how important it is for us ladies to respect ourselves and that we deserve to be thin, healthy, and beautiful!

A more scientific book that I really loved was called Eating for Optimum Health by Dr. Andrew Weil.  This guy talks about the true benefits and drawbacks of different foods.  He has written a lot of health books.  He even wrote one on Aging and foods.  Smart guy.  I think he's from Harvard.

But I'm a person who's not crazy about diet books in general.  I find most of them tend to contradict eachother and I just end up getting confused and saying **** it.  But the two I just mentioned are fantastic.
I'm actually on the mailing list for French Women Don't get Fat and really enjoy the tips they send me.
Oh that's awesome you're going to love it!

I heard an interview that this guy did on NPR and I have been wanting to read the book. He is all about eliminating all of the "food-like substances" that aren't really food in our diets.
