Bored with breakfast

Quote  |  Reply

I don't have much time in the morning while getting ready for work.  Usually I eat cereal and have coffee - For the most part since last summer I have been eating a serving of Special K Protein with skim milk.  I like it because it seems to keep me full longer than any other cereal because of the protein.  Problem is I am really bored with it.  I like eggs but I just don't want to wake up early and spend time making them - I like to put whatever vegetables I have with them scrambled or omlet.  I do not like oatmeal - I like cream of wheat and I have the microwave one but its such a small serving I don't feel full.  Today I had a weight watchers bagel with whipped philadelphia cream cheese - It's been an hour and a half and I'm still good... I usually eat a south beach protein cereal bar between 11-12 as a snack before lunch at 1:30.  On the weekends I eat more fun breakfasts... but any advice for other cereals or any other ideas?? Thanks.

I am the same as you. I don't have the time to make a huge breakfast. I'm not a fan of oatmeal either.

My faves for a quick fix leaving me full:

Peanut butter and banana wrap. 1 tbsp PB on a weight watchers tortilla with a banana wrapped inside. (270-300 calories)

I buy egg beaters. I put 1/2 cup in a tupperware, with whatever veggies I have, and if I don't have veggies, I use a tbsp of salsa. When I get to work, I microwave for 3 minutes, stirring halfway through. It puffs up so nice and it's no work at all! (50 calories for the eggs and then add salsa and veggies, puts you at no more than 90 cals)

I'm full till lunch at 1pm.

I like that egg beater idea!

I usually have 2 whole wheat waffles with sugar free syrup  and a cup of apple slices or a banana. Its around 200 and keeps me full.

Can you do this the night before??  Do egg beaters taste good??

Two of my faves when I need a break from the Special K are:

Kashi Go Lean waffles- Only 170cal for 2 waffles
Thomas' Light Muffin + Laughing Cow Light= 100cal+35cal

Both are quick to make and very filling since they have high fiber content.

Microwaved scrambled egg whites are good. It is quick and you can add cheese, veggies and any thing else you'd like. Scrambled egg whites and a yogurt cup and a slice of light wheat toast are good and easy too. I don't like to spend more than 5 minutes on preparing my breakfast lol.

For more fun "weekend" breakfasts, try french toast with light wheat bread (around 35 cal a slice). Use egg whites and unsweetened vanilla almond breeze and tons of cinnamon for the batter then just set them on a super hot, non stick griddle pan! I also do pancakes made from oatmeal, egg whites and unsweetened almond breeze. Sugar free syrup works wonderful for both the french toast and pancakes. 1/4c is 35 calories. Also microwave 2 tbsp of sugar free jam( strawberry or blueberry are the best) and add a bit of splenda and mix it so it gets syrupy :-).

Do you like smoothies? If you have a blender, smoothies are SO much fun in the morning and you can change them up as much as you want! Plus they have the potential to be VERY nutritional and are super filling.

I have recently been enjoying frozen banana, light vanilla soy milk and almond/peanut butter smoothies. Mmm, so good. But just stock up on your favorite fruit and juices. Paired with a piece of toast or something of the like, and you'll be full 'till lunch time.

I like waffles with peanut butter.

if you like hot cereal, try Bob's Red Mill 7 Grain cereal.  You can make it big batches or the night before.  It has a consistency like Cream of Wheat but has lots of whole grains and fiber.

Greek Yoghurt is another high-protein, easy breakfast food.

Oh my yes! Egg beaters are just egg whites. I do it the night before and it takes two seconds. Just pour the eggs into your container and add your veggies and whatever. Grab and go in the morning!

Egg beaters taste exactly the same as eggs to me. Give em a try!

I am in the same boat as you!  I would rather sleep in the mornings than make breakfast, haha. Embarassed

But, for me, whole wheat toast or an English muffin with peanut of almond butter fills me up until lunch.  If I'm still hungry, I'll add to that an apple or a glass of low-fat milk.

You might also want to try adding berries (blueberries or raspberries) to your existing cereal for some extra fiber and to create a slightly new taste.

As for eggs, I rarely have time to wake up and scramble them on weekday mornings (though I do love scrambled eggs with asparagus), so I hard boil a few ahead of time and keep them in the fridge.  Some people don't care for them too much, though, so that's a catch for a lot of people; but if you do, they are a handy, portable, filling snack and/or breakfast.

Yoghurt +

  • granola. Bear naked has a ton of flavors. I love chocolate and peak protein.
  • granola bar. Crumble it on the top or have it on the side.
  • nuts. Walnuts, almonds, pecans, brazil, cashews, whatever.
  • seeds. Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds.
  • fresh fruit. Raspberries are my fave. Or you could just grab a fruit like a pear for the side.
  • dried fruit. Dehydrated bananas, kiwi, acai/goji berries, peaches, mango, strawberries, raisins, craisins, the list is endless.
  • cereal. Peanut butter puffins, cinnamon puffins, kashi honey sunshine tastes like honeycombs.
  • muesli. Never personally have had it, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.
  • fresh fruit+juice=smoothie. Quick, easy & versatile.
  • dollop on top of pancakes/waffles. Strawberry yoghurt + fresh cut strawberries. Yumm.
  • +muffin.

I do this and add soy protein! Easy to change up and super satisfying!

So I have just started to eat breakfast and lately I have been really open to multiple ideas.... My favorite by far though is canned pumpkin or canned butternut squash mixed with egg whites & pumpkin pie spice (or cinnamon, nutmeg & cloves) & stevia. This meal is packed with protein, healthy carbs & tons of vitamins & minerals!! I had that this morning for breakfast and for lunch 3 omega-3 enriched soft boiled eggs & more pumpkin!!! I ate it straight from the can! ha ha. SO something quick for you could be a few hard boiled eggs and some pumpkin! I promise, if you like pumpkin pie: you'll adore simply canned pumpkin!

I gotta say, Igloogal, I did the egg beater thing for breakfast this morning and I loved it!!!

Awesome idea! How long do you microwave them for?

Great to hear Jane. . . sounds gross, but I'm gonna try adding the canned pumpkin to mine next time. I love pumpkin pie!

Chiefsfan:

Same as egg beaters. Stir after a minute and a half and it's usually another minute and a half after that. (I use a commercial microwave at work)

Thanks! Somehow I missed that earlier

I have never tried egg beaters. I  usually buy egg whites by organic valley. What is the difference?

Egg beatersare made with egg whites. Some brands of low-cal egg substitute have a minimal yolk for colouring, others use artificial colour. Also, egg beaters have been pasteurized, which means you can safely use them in recipes that do not call for cooking, whereas egg whites should be fully cooked to be considered safe. Hope this helps.

oatmeal and a banana and cottage cheese.

high protein, great potassium. plus, a big breakfast is better. kicks up your metabolism. eating just a single piece of toast or egg beaters does more harm than good. cutting calories to lose weight may actually mean that you're cutting out vital nutrients that your body needs
