getting bored with rffl

Quote  |  Reply

so im on my 5th week, next week my last before the wedding. my heart rate is not really going up enough anymore. not to mention im sweating less. i really dont want to add anymore time to it and i've gone up in weight, can't go anymore without improper form. i have 2 more weeks to go, but feeling less like doing it. still need to burn as many calories as i can before the big day. any ideas?

oh i've all decreased my rest time in between sets.

I've read a little about RFFL but never tried it.  Like you, I know I'm getting close to jumping the shark on a workout routine when I start to get bored.  For me, seems like the boredom actually adds to the inablility to get motivated and pump your heart rate up etc, which lessens the workout's effectiveness even MORE.

One thing I've done in the past to alleviate that if I'm doing a program that recommends doing it for "x" number of weeks or months and I'm tired of it before then is flipping the order in which I do the exercises--either messing with a couple of them or actually doing the workout completely backwards.  Throws the ol' muscle memory a curve ball and has helped me get a couple more weeks out of a routine while I decide what's next.

I don't know if you can do that with RFFL.  Barring that, you could try what we useta do in high school.  Want to sweat more?  Bundle up in 2-3 layers of sweats when you work out.  Nasty but effective.  There's probably many other things you could do as well, but I'm still learning too.  If you find another solution that works for you, post it here.  I usually get bored about week 8 myself.

hmm, well i guess i could try adding a little more weight (love adding weight) but in order to do that ill need to do less reps than suggested BUT in between sets, i would jump rope to get the ol heart a pumping.

i like what jump roping does for my calves. and like you said maybe switch order of the exercises.  it's really only 4 or 5 more workouts to go before im outta here for a month.

for some reason i didn't expect my body to adapt to it so quickly. guess my nutrition must be doing well. the first couple of weeks were a killer!

cheers!

I made a few modifications to the exercises to make them harder as time went by, and that kept the results coming. though I must say - if you have the energy to do anything but pant for the 30 seconds of rest you get between exercises, you're not using enough weight ;)

um thats the problem though. i went up as far as i could without toppling over. my endurance seems to have gone ahead of my strength.

 It happens :)

I scrolled back through my journal and found the start of the modified program - you can maybe get some mileage out of looking at the way I slightly modified some of the moves to make them harder.

my my, we are meticulous are we not? Laughing so after all this exercise, work, eating, logging and keeping us in order on the fitness section, when do you sleep?

I think he's a cyborg who works for amusement as opposed to necessity, works out constantly, and doesn't NEED sleep, just a quick charge at a wall outlet.

Sort of a cross between Data from Star Trek and a Terminator.

It's the only explanation that makes sense to me. Cool

Pure speculation, of course.  Whatever he is I'm glad he's here.

melkor the cyborg. has a nice ring to it.

anyway last night i upped the weight i would normally do for session 2 & i added some jump roping. i know i should be happy but it even took my longer than usual to feel the burn from jump roping.

anyway we all must struggle on i guess.

ok did more modifications. added in jump ropes between the first 2 sets, then the third set added in that 'around the world' step move with jumps. i also stopped doing those overly complicated burpees i made up to replace the chin-up move that i can't do.

replaced it with good ol fashion push-ups with my feet on the stepper to make it harder & a tricep move. my triceps have seemingly lost some definition even though everything else has not since stopping to work them in isolation.

anyway bottom line, i got my dopamine/serotonin fix. i think that's really where the boredom came from. as my body adapted i just wasn't getting the same high. am i a junkie?
