Getting bored with working out

Quote  |  Reply

What should I do?! I'm getting so bored with working out.  I go from using my gazelle to walkign with my son, walking the dogs, working out to tv, working out at the small community center.... I've been thinking of going to a real gym we have here or maybe even some aerobics classes but really, im a little intimidated.  I live on an Army base so it's not even like a normal gym, everyone there is extra fit

If you have an MP3 player or phone with such feature, you can listen to music while exercising.

Or another possibility is that you are not challenging yourself hard enough? Maybe your work out is too easy for you that you get bored.

I just joined a moderate to intense water aerobic class and love it!  The time flies by and I can feel an all body workout.

We have a public pool and I joined there for $13 a month.

Don't let yourself be intimidated by the "extra fit" people at the gym.  They're bound to admire the fact that you're there to improve your physical fitness, and may even have some helpful advice for you.  Besides, I'm sure there's at least one person in that group who was overweight and/or less fit at some point in their lives and could provide you with some inspiration.

I've been one of the fit people in the gym, I've also been a really unfit pudding in the gym. Both times I was too busy screaming my way through sets of lunges to look at anyone else :)

Yeah as mentioned above, only bullies/meat heads use intimidation!

So don't feel intimidated at all. Those 'extra fit' people as you've mentioned ALL had to start out at some point from fat/flab to muscle/tone so don't think for a moment that they were always like that.

Personally when I started to work out I felt a little intimidated of the muscle bound guys who were doing mini-ton presses and lifting dumb bells that weigh as much as I did. But after just simply introducing myself to them and talking to them they actually gave me very informative tips and even helped spot me on numerous occasions as I explained that I was a complete novice.

Now however I'm still good friends with them and appreciate going for broke and just not letting appearances take ahold of my sense.

Just go for the gym! You have nothing to lose except weight and all to gain in muscle!

I agree. Sign up at a gym. You are going to have a lot more options at a gym with free weights/weight machines, classes, personal trainers, etc.. Gold's has a great deal right now of $49 bucks down and $15 a month. I jumped at that offer.

I have always been able to lift weights and not get bored. Where I would get bored, would be in the cardio room. I hate doing cardio with a passion. Luckily you only need 90-120 minutes per week to maintain cardiovascular fitness. I can't believe that some people do hours and hours of it everyweek.

One thing I did to conquer the boredom in my steady state cardio sessions, was to get myself a portible DVD player. All gyms have TV's in the cardio room, but it is really hard to concentrate on them and you end up having to read the closed captioning subtitles. So I bought a cheap portible DVD player and took it with me.  Most cardio machines have grooves/stands on them that allow you to lay the player down. It has gotten me through a lot of boring cardio sessions. You get caught up in the movie or show you are watching and time flies a lot faster. It can be used on elipticals, stairmasters, bikes, treadmills (when walking), etc.. I mean you might as well get your exercise done at the same time as your movie/TV watching right?..LOL

* The only cardio exercise you probably couldn't use the DVD player on would be running on the treadmill. Treadmills have a tendency to shake a bit when you are running and this makes the DVD player bounce around.
