Your Boring Name--love it or hate it??
I have a unique name, and I have always hated it. It's kind of a trashy stripper name, and on top of that it is spelled "creatively," so I always have to spell it out. I always really just wished my name was something normal and boring and my personality could speak for itself.
That made me wonder though, how does it feel to have a common name? Has it been a good or bad experience? Do you find people forget your name a lot?
I have a boring name. What gets me is that people like to use the elongated version of it and don't believe me when I tell them that that is not my name. I have had to show my birth certificate to stop people from calling me the other name.
BTW, I have only three letters in my name and I still have to spell it out for people.
No bad experiences here regarding my name, still I don't really like my given name since I know toooooo many 'Amandas' so I sort of revamped my name as you can see.
Spoiled_Candy- 3 letters and still?! Dang. At least I would definitely remember how to pronounce/spell your name since I don't try to assume names phonetically. Had a lot of friends whose parents liked to play on names... like Kacie for Casey, etc.
My name is not boring. I spell it, repeat it but still people insist on calling me anything BUT my name. These new names are often more creative than my real name. But I dont blame people really. My name is akward on the toungue. It is murder for people with a lisp.
My name is Suzette. But mostly I am known by Susan, Suzanna, Suzie, Sue, Gisette, Lisette and Corvette ....vroooom!
I want to be Jane, Jill, or Debbie. Or maybe even BOB. Ah...Bob. So easy it is almost refined. Madame Bob. "No last name, just Bob."
You see my last name is worse than my first name. When I write a check the checkers usually joke that I am writing a novel. There are never enough spaces on forms for my whole name. So my junk mail is not addressed to the right name either. When telemarketers call they will ask for someone who does not exist. That is convenient, but annoying. "No I have never heard of Ms. XXXX., perhaps you have the wrong number."
It is like I was born with a biblical prophacy. "If you discover how to pronounce her name correctly, there will be peace for a 1,000 years".
My name is Eileen and I love it. But no one can get it right. I get called Irene, Elaine, Ellen, or things not even close. And of course, everyone thinks it's spelled Ilene (like some spell it), or Ilean.
And don't even get me started on the jokes I hear!!
But I wouldn't change my name ever!
My names, both first and last, are very, very common.
We're more organized than you think.
Have club meetings every now and then.
Mine is fairly common (Shannon), but I've even sent faxes and they sent them back to Susan or Sharon. I get sharon a LOT.
I've always liked it though. there's not a ton of other Shannons, plus I'm irish (even though that's not why they named me that).
RE: Eileen- that song was playing at the club one night and some guy comes up to hit on me. asks me my name.. I tell him "EILEEEN!" *grinning*... he says (all serious) "hi eileen, i'm matt"
I walked away. sheesh. You have to get my jokes to get wit me. ;) hehehe
I have a rather normal first name and a unique last name. I think I like it best that way. My first name's Jennifer (usually shortened to Jen), one of the more common female names. I have one of those crazy Polish last names that make people look silly when they try to pronounce it. The z always throws them off... >.<
my name is maria. i hated it when i was a kid (ever notice that all the latino maids on all the TV shows are named maria?) but i've gotten used to it. it also seems like it used to be rare but isn't anymore.
i used to get called marie all the time and i'd let it go, but not anymore (as you might imagine).
and i love it when i meet someone from central/south america or the mediterranean; they pronounce it so beautifully :)
edit: oh--yeah--and them my last name is totally common and anglo-saxon and really doesn't fit. but again - doesn't bother me anymore.
I just met a girl named Maria.
I have a fairly unique name, and I love it. Natasha. Many people consider it to be a bit exotic. So, you would think that my name would be easy to remember. But, I am called Natalie by quite a few people. I HATE the name Natalie.
People assume I am Russian. When I went through the bank drive through last week, the customer service rep saw my name and excitedly started rambling in Russian. Of course I had no idea what she was saying. It makes for awkward moments.
People also say my name like I am a Russian spy or something. In a sexy whisper. But, my friends call me Boris.

I'll never stop saying Maria, Maria, Maria...
My name is Kate. I like my name, but apparently other people don't because most new people I meet call me Katie or Kathy. This inspires seething rage in me.
Jennifer - the most popular name from the seventies. I don't hate it though. The full version has a day-time-drama feel and the shortened, Jen, is kinda cute and snappy. My middle name is completely hippy and strange but I keep that one to myself like a little secret.

my orthodontist sang that to me every six weeks for three years. he'd sit down, look at the chart, and start singing. it was mortifying.
and then every christmas season, i'd get that other gem: How do you solve a problem like maria?
then there's the madonna one, which i hate.
but i love the brooks & dunne ![]()

cheyenne? sierra? tiffaneee?
B&D.. is that the one that's "my maria"? cause that's one of the few (less than 5) country songs I can tolerate. :)
I hate when DH calls me that, because my middle name is Marie and my grandma calls me marie and it just feels wrong to add the extra syllable.
I have a very common first and last name as far as pronunciation goes. However the spelling of both is very unique. The combination of the two spellings throws people for a loop. They absolutely can not pronounce either if they see the two together.
I love the spelling of my first name. The spelling of my last name is just an annoyance. I love the way the two sound together though. It used to really bother me that no one could pronounce my name and that no one could remember how to spell my first name. Now it doesn't bother me at all. I don't even bother to spell my first and last name if it isn't important. I don't bother to tell people my first name is spelled differently unless it has to be written down somewhere.
It's really kind of funny how stupid people can be about the whole thing. I finally learned to spell my name and then pronounce it after they wrote it down. That way it could sink in for them. It's funny to see their faces. The look at the name, listen to the pronunciation, look up at me, look back at the spelling, look back at me and then pronounce it back to me with a question in their eyes and voice. I just laugh now.
By the way, my first name is only 5 letters and my last name is only 4 letters.

Lol, no, actually I think it is worse. I don't want to say because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings who might have the same name or who might like it or have kids or something. Funny enough though, one of my teachers DID call me Tiffany for about a year, even though that is nothing CLOSE to my name, and then after that, he called me Amber. Even other people started calling me Tiffany and Amber. ![]()
I like Maria! I like Mary and Marie too. It IS very annoying when people continually sing name songs over and over though, like it is actually funny. Now that you mention it, Maria does have quite a few name songs.
My name's pretty common (chelsea), but there are still people that see it and call me something like "Chels-a", "Chelsee-a" or, my personal favorite, "Celeste".
My last name is a treat...It's pronounced exactly the way it's spelt, but people struggle with it. I never knew four letters could be so difficult haha.
But overall, as boring as my name is, I'm pretty good with it...I do't know, sometimes I wish it were more exciting, but I'm not that exciting either, so we work well together :P.
Is it Lola? Barbie? or one of those name ending in I that you dot with a heart when you're a teen?
