Boston Gyms

What clubs do you all belong to? Where is it? Why do you like/dislike it? I live in Central Square but I'm not sure there are nice enough fitness centers around me to pay for a membership. I am currently relying on my school's gym but I hate commuting to the campus! I know of BSC and the Y in Central Square but both have gotten really mixed reviews. I am a student, so I can't go anywhere too fancy, although if I'm paying I would rather the place be nice.

Thanks!

Kim,

I belong to the Ballies in Porter Square...been going there for oo little over 2 years now.  Perfect place I think, the classes are the best part fun and enjoyable and they don't cost any extra.  Being that you're in Central square this may just be a quick simple T ride for ya because its right next to Porter Sq. T stop.

I started off with trainers and then moved to the classes...gets busy around 5/6pm but overal good time.  Think i'm paying about $30 a month now so if thats in your budget range then think it'd be perfect for ya...mostly young crowd there i'd say from 20-30s most people but thats a guess.

  Hope this helps

Keith

I go to Beacon Hill Athletic Club which is amazing.  I go to the one in Brighton but they have places all over the city.  Its almost never crowded (even 5-6 I've never had to wait for a machine), they have a free towel service, and its very clean and modern.  The staff is also very friendly and will answer any questions about your workout that you may have.

The only drawback for me is the clientele is generally a bunch of ditzy girls with spray tans chewing gum with their eyes glued to MTV and guys who think its an obligation to show how hard they're working out by grunting and panting as loudly as possible.  That's a fairly minor quibble though.  If you can live with that its great.

It runs around 60 a month but you can cancel anytime.  I know I got a discounted membership at BSC through my last job and it was still 80 a month, and the Y would wind up costing me the same.  The only thing I know of that's cheaper is planet fitness, which is around 20 a month but the nearest one is in waltham or dorchester.

I go to Planet Fitness in East Boston.  It's only $10 a month.  If you pay 20 you can use any of the PF locations.  Drawback - no classes, no childcare.

i go to the L st. gym right in here in southie. it's $70 a year and that includes all available classes its not that bad especially for the price. and on top of that, it's right next to the beach so in the summer you can just go for a swim in the ocean which is like the best work out you can get.!.!.!Laughing
