Boxing?

Quote  |  Reply

Anyone out there box, or take boxing classes?

On a whim I signed up for 10 women's boxing classes with a friend of mine in Boston.  It says beginners are welcome, and she's never boxed either, so it should be interesting :)

I think it'll be so fun, a great workout, and definately a break from routine.

Anyone has stories/tips/experiences/advice to share?

I've taken Muay Thai. I want to sign up for boxing though. It's the only thing interesting to me offered where I'm stationed.

You just have trust that your instructor knows their stuff. He/she might have you doing something that feels awkward, but necessary. Learning anything new just takes some getting used to.

I was boxing with an Amateur Boxing Club for a few years.

Boxing's a hard workout but try and enjoy it as it will get you very fit.  Hopefully the instructor will be able to teach you good technique as that can be a workout in itself.

Good Luck :-)

I did it last year, and I loved it.  There is a challenging mix of weight training and cardio.  It's great for fitness, I enjoyed it much more than any other class I've ever taken.

I'd recommend it - have fun

I've been taking boxing classes for the past month and I love it. It's a really tough workout and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is completely out of shape. My classes last 90 minutes and start with 30 minutes of cardio (jump rope, jogging, sprints, other crazy drills). Then we get into teams of 2 and we practice the drills the coach shows us (one has boxing gloves, the other one holds the pads, then we switch).  We probably do hundreds of push ups and sit ups throughout the class. At the end of the class we stretch. I had never done something that intense and I had never sweated that much before.

It's really important to get the right technique, so I hope your coach will help you with that. There are a lot of boxing technique videos on Youtube, I find it very useful to look at them and then practice my technique in front of a mirror.

I've been doing Muay Thai (thai kickboxing) for over a year and a half now and I love it!  It's such a great workout!
