I had braces froma ge 10 to 13 years (im 20 now). I hated them but i was just a little kid. If i can give you any advice, please keep up your after care on your teeth when you get your braces off. Its been a while sinc ei had braces but when i got mine off i had to wear a retainer at night to keep them strait. Well i hardly ever wore it and now, although they are no where near as bad, my teeth are somewhat crooked. If i could do it over then i would have worn that retainer day nad nigh tjust so my teeth would stay perfectly strait.

I had braces when i was 13/14?  for two years.  they were a bit of a pain now and again but totally worth it.  teeth are perfectly straight now.  my dentists oo and ah over my teeth everytime I go in for a cleaning :-)
I had massive orthodontic work done from the time I was 9 until right before I left for college. When I was 9, my teeth were pretty straight but I had an 11mm overbite (almost a half inch). I had to get bone growth work done which basically consisted of them widening the roof of my mouth and having me wear a retainer(called a twin block) which made me thrust my lower jaw forward in order to close my mouth to make my lower jaw longer. I had a break from age 12-15 then they started on me again. Because of the work done to widen the roof of my mouth they had to put something in called a molar rotator to pull my molars back in so they were pointing more toward the floor. They also put another twin block in (this time cemented to my teeth) to lengthen my lower jaw more. Then I had braces to straighten my teeth and bands to close my open bite(meaning my teeth didn't touch in the front). All in all, I am satified with the work.

I may not have to wear mine for a full 2 years, cause there straightening up fast! but i get them off soon! i hope! i got my bands back the other day there black and red! school colors.... But even tho i hate pink...the BEST 2 colors that ive had together are PINK and LIME GREEN! lol

Oh I had braces for about a year and a half when I was 13 or 14ish...I remember choosing different colors every time I went in to get them tightened...
i get mine off today!! It's going to feel really wierd not having anything in my mouth but my teeth and gums. I'm so excited, i have had them for two years too.

I had braces as a teenager, and then again at age 42 (yup - 42!)  My sister also had braces twice, too.

Teeth move as you age - so keep wearing that retainer when you get your braces off - FOREVER!...

Good luck!
I had braces most of my high school tenure. From middle of freshman year until the summer before senior year. (Almost 3 yrs). I diligently wore my retainers afterward, but am going to get them refit for my mouth because I have a tooth that is creeping out of line! GRRR

oops dbl post

I had them when I was younger and I thnk I wore them for 18 months?  They really weren't as bad as people sometimes make them out to be; I liked when I got to wear my retainer because I would snap it off the top of my mouth and flip it around. lol :D
So is it good to keep wearing ur retainers, forever?
I'm 27 and got my braces on in June.  I'm hoping to have them off in about 2 years (so June 2009) but who knows.

It's only been 4 months and I've seen a lot of improvement already!  I'm happy I got them but wished I would have got them when I was way younger.

Anyway, yes you have to wear a retainer for at least a year after your braces are off and usually the ortho will tell you if you need to keep wearing it or if they need to put in a permanent one behind your teeth later. :D

My doctor suggested I wear them as long as possible because I guess your teeth stop adjusting by the time you're 25. But...your teeth can start moving again when yuo are pregnant. So wear it often then as well. I know I will be!

I still have mine after 6-7 years.  Partly through fault of my own - took them off when they were annoying, ate whatever food I wanted, etc and partly because my Ortho+Dentist waited too long on deciding that I needed surgery for an impacted tooth. Hoping to get them off in 2-4 months or so..... so sick of them!
i have an appointment on the 6th nov to start dental treatment. one tooth has decided to move forward and i absolutely hate it. not sure how long i would need the brace for or any details... not looking forward to having it - im 26!! but know it will be worth it in the end.

you have to wear a retainer forever? i didnt know that :0/

I got my braces off in 1988 and yet still to this day I have a wire glued to the back side of most of my bottom teeth.

Almost 20 years later and no dentist will even think about removing it.  I've asked.

I had one on the top too, but that fell off after half a dozen years or so and they ground off the glue and never replaced it, but that wire on the bottom....still there!  Don't know how I'd feel if it wasn't.

Has anyone ever heard of invisaline? They are clear molds that you wear instead of braces. You can take them out as you please, so you really have to be motivated not to take them out. They are a lot more expensive, but I am 24 and my teeth have moved a lot. This is something I would really consider doing. It's a good option for adults who need braces.
Back in Feb on the 20th 3 days before my b-day! umm i had to have surgery, cause a tooth the baby tooth still hasnt come out (lost all my teeth thank god!) umm and when i was a baby i would run 101-102 temp and it made that tooth crack, and so then the perment tooth never came down cause it was never getting loose...But anywho, umm the tooth was (perment) was going sideways in my mouth, and so they went in and took some skin off, and put a chain around it (BLUE! my fav color!) and attached the chain to my tooth and to my braces and EVERY month that i went to get my teeth tighten they would pull the chain bac so that the tooth could come down! Now its been 9 months and my tooth is now down...no more chain.....yeah! but still got the braces!

Ur teeth get tighter quick!!!! but just think even tho u go through the pain just think when u get them off u will have pretty teeht!

One bit of advice once you get braces off: Wear your retainer.

I didn't the first time as a teen and I ended up with braces again in my 30's.  Going through all that once was bad enough, but twice was really crappy.  My own fault though!

I was THRILLED when they came off this time and I wear my top retainer every night now.  I got a permanent retainer on the bottom as those teeth will want to keep moving.  It was all worth it, but wish I'd listened as a teen so I didn't have to do it all over again.
