Brand of chocolate?
Kind of after taking that survey on chocolates in that sticky in this forum, I was wondering: what are your favorite brands of chocolate, and for what kind of chocolate is it? I'm currently searching for the best brand of chocolate for very dark (we're talking >80%) and also the best brand for fruit, nut, and other pairings (still dark though xD).
Also, I was wondering what the difference between Lindt's bars and their thinner counterparts because I was looking at the prices, and although the weights are almost the same, the thin ones are twice the price of the thicker bars!
Trader Joe's has dark (70%) and milk chocolate in 100 calorie portions. They taste good and are portion controlled.
according to consumer reports (i don't buy socks w/o checking its ratings, i'm such a devotee), hershey extra dark (from the cacao reserve line) is super duper. lindt excellence extra fine dark, chocolove organic dark, varlhona le noir amer dark bittersweet, scharffen berger semisweet pure dark come in after the hershey. (chocolate not rated as highly: dagoba, trader joes, dove, ghiradelli, cocovia, newman's own).
in my experience, varlhona is all talk and price tag. godiva's not worth the wrapping it's packed with. lindt's actually pretty good; so's chocolate from le maison du chocolat.
I'm a big fan of scharffen berger for just straight chocolate. In terms of fruit and nut combinations, there are two that I really like: Chocolove dark chocolate raspberry (not just raspberry flavor, it actually has chunks of freeze dried raspberries) and Dagoba lime, which I never thought I'd like, but is actually awesome.
I love Dove dark chocolate....180 a serving (bar), I think.
I know, I know...it isn't all fancy, but it is sooooo smooth, and such a treat on the days when I deserve it!
My favorite dark chocolate with almonds is Cote d'Or, but I don't think it's 80%. Another good dark chocolate pairing is the Dutch Sinas Snippers, which are dark chocolate over a gelled orange center. In the candy bar category with nuts, Almond Mounds are pretty good. The best flat-out good chocolate candy bar for my taste is a Needham (dark chocolate over coconut, made in Maine), but I could not tell you where to find one.
Personally, I have always loved Green and Black's Cherry. There is also a brand called Divine that sells fairtrade dark chocolate that I have always quite liked since first trying it. Sadly, I have yet to find myself a decent dairy-free dark chocolate. Hmm... >:|
