reading forums on here, i c that having a balanced diet is key to being fit and healthy. so, is eating bread THAT bad, as i hav been led to believe by the media?
i usually get my carbs through sweet potatoes and oatmeal, but i do eat bread too. so, is eating bread, say, every other day or so ok??
i exercise every day, like running a mile, or doing 20 mins of cardio and 20 mins of ab exercise a day, so i dont c eating anything too unhealthy everyday is a big issue.
just curious is all? any input??
thx <<33
Depends on the bread, right? I mean, there's the low-nutritinal value bleached white bread that might as well be cardboard but soft; there's the oil-laden, sugary raisin bread that packs a whallop of calories; and there's the 100% whole grain, no sugar added fresh stuff that I see NOTHING wrong with having as part of a balanced diet...like with everything you put into your mouth it's about the quality of your choices.
The media simplifies everything in order to sell certain things...which change frequently anyway. Carbs aren't bad - fat isn't bad - protein isn't bad. Everything in moderation! Pick a healthy bread, eat it in sensible quantities, and enjoy it guilt-free!
yes i reach for the sugar free bread, or whole grain, like i do with cereal. i try to get the lowest sodium lowest sugar and fat content cereal i can find.
thx
I dont think it is so bad. However i make sure to eat whole grain or wheat just so it has some nutritional value to it.
i dont get this, bread is not bad at all. in fact wholemeal is very very good for you, it contains vitamins and is a great carb source. people brand certain foods bad and fattening but they are only bad or fattening when in excess and along with an otherwsiee bad diet. i have to say i ate terribly and lost a lot of weight unheathily an regret it so much but even when i was doing this i ate atleas 2 slices of bread a day. bread is good, just stick to wholemeal and dont eat too much of it, like with anything. :)
i am good at not indulging or eating too much of anything except when it comes to PB, jesslima!! lol i cant get enough of it. so, i get crazy richard's 100% pb, with no sodium, only 2g of sat fat per serving, and 7 carbs, plus 9g of protein (2 more than jiff or skippy!) plus, it taste better i think.
thank u all for the speedy advice!
I eat two slices of bread a day, and I've lost 10 pounds. :) Bread is good for you I think, but it's highish-cal so maybe you will want to moderate yourself. But it's not bad, so to speak, just not good either.
bread is fine in moderation just like anything else..you just want to try to get the whole grain because then at least you are getting some vitamins and fiber/protein out of it. Having big sandwiches for breakfast lunch and dinner would be too much bread imo
I refuse to believe bread is bad for you. My great grandfather went through a half a loaf of white bread a day by himself. He lived to be a month shy of his 102 birthday. The only reason he didn't live longer was my great grandmother died and he didn't want to. He contracted a mild case of Phenmonia. The doctor said he would be fine in a few days. He on the other hand told his sons, that he had out lived his Identical twin brother, and his wife and he didn't really want to stick around anymore. Five minutes later he was dead. He lived as long as he wanted to. The half a loaf of bread didn't hurt him none. The man never weighed an ounce over what he was suppose to despite all that bread. Or maybe because of it.
I really do not feel bread to be good for anyone - most types are full of white flour which is completely void of nutrients and others also contain trans fats and sugar! The only type of bread I would recommend anyone to eat is Ezekiel Bread which is not processed, has a lot of fiber per serving and has no sugar or trans fats. I believe this bread's brand is called Food For Life - I used to make French Toast out of it by dipping it in an egg white/cinnamon mix and then pan "frying" it in Olive Oil Spray - and then topping it off with Sugar Free Maple Syrup (zero-calories).

White bread is so processed and zapped of all nutrients and it lacks fibre or pretty much anything which might make it worth eating. So I consider it bad.
But wholemeal bread is quite good for you! I found a good kind which is 75 cals a slice, so I have a sandwich with 2 slices practically every day! It has fibre and a surprising amount of protein. Nothing to avoid there.
why would it be "bad"? wholewheat bread is great, i eat tons everyday and i always have.
It's really not that black and white, I don't think. I know that bread is what really causes me to gain weight, but that's because I love it so much I can eat loaves of it no problem! But I didn't cut it out of my diet completely, I just avoid the delish bread covered in garlic butter that comes at Italian restaurants and don't eat pasta 5 times a week like I'd like to.
The only bad thing about most bread is that they're generally high cal. That's the only bad thing about bread as far as I'm concerned.
I eat bread every single day just about. I'm just moderate in the amount of bread I consume.
Bread's a perfectly good foodstuff when eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Wholemeal bread is the best nutritionally but even the much maligned white bread provides useful energy. The French have been enjoying freshly baked, crusty white baguettes for years and don't seem to do too badly on it.
Get a good variety of foods across all the food-groups, go for the best quality you can afford and you really can't go wrong.
Lots of opinions, but lots of people fail to mention that not everyone metabolizes all foods the same way.
As a diabetic, I know not all starches and carbs are alike. I have tough time burning through the cards in beans and rice (beans are also a protein) but no problem with the carbs in bread or pasta. Also, when eaten in combinations (fats and/or proteins with carbs) thee is a difference in how many are absorbed into your system and how they are "tempered".
Bread isn't all bad... in fact, one that's available on the West Coast in almost all stores that is quite reasonable (and it's a LARGE slice) is Oroweat Double Fiber Bread. It's got 10 net carbs per slice, less than 1 gm of fat and 70 calories. If consumed with liquid, the fiber helps you feel more full than you may actually be.
Like another response said, it's not so much the bread as what you might put on it... butter, jam, mayo, etc.

grains have enymze inihibtors that block digestion and such. Called phytic acid. Its the seeds natural defense system.
Bread flour should be sprouted *( ezekiel bread is sprouted grains, mixed into a mash, however i dont eat, i dont do soy...)
or better still, theres sourdough fermentation, real sourdoughs digest the bread for you and make it very easy to digest and metabolise. it also is said to lower GI impact on blood sugar.
agian, i should mention that you eat all whole grains and prepare them properly, also wheat is found to give many people trouble in digestion, personally i do better without it. Sprouted or not, i do fine on spelt, but agian, in moderation.
My 2 cents on the subject are probably not helpful because I grind my own wheat and bake all the breads that my family eats myself so I know exactly what's in it and can guarantee the freshness and quality. I think bread is great though I try to eat just one slice a day. I add shredded vegetables, seeds, nuts, good things all. My children are bread maniacs and I am fine with letting them eat it. Consider the junk they could be eating instead.
