Breakfast activates hunger?
I find that as soon as I eat breakfast in the morning I start feeling hungry. The earlier I eat breakfast, the more I tend to eat in a day. The longer I postpone breakfast, the less hungry I feel. I know I should be eating breakfast right away but it screws up my entire day.
It doesn't seem to matter what the breakfast is or how big it is.
Yesterday I had breakfast early for the first time in two weeks AND for the first time in two weeks I over ate over the course of the day.
Does anyone else have a similar problem? How do you overcome it?
Then make sure you have your regular meals and snacks lined up for the rest of the day... lots of filling, nutritious stuff that will satisfy that hunger and keep the metabolism lively.... and tailored so that they hit your calorie intake target. If you have to make your calorie intake a little higher than it is currently, that might help. You'll probably find you lose weight quicker as a result
Good luck and keep enjoying your breakfast.
Heyyy! You just described ME!
gi-jane, you are always so insightful and full of helpful advice! However, it doesn't matter what I eat for breakfast (oatmeal, fat free yogurt with fruit and granola, whole grain cereal, whole grain toast with peanut butter, etc..) You name it! As soon as I finish eating it, I am hungry all day.
I will take your advice though. Thanks for the topic moonstaz!
EDIT: Removed a pointless line.
I do feel more hungry just after I've eaten breakfast. This week I've been eating a cup of eggbeaters with some salsa and ice water. I was this close to adding some tortilla chips in it and making it like Migas... but I didn't. That would have been an extra 160 cals for 9 chips... and I'd rather eat a snack before bed.
Anyway, back to your post - I just make myself busy, drink water, chew a piece of sugar free gum and hold off until lunch.
I have the same problem. I wake up around 5 am, have a couple of hot drinks and am not interested in eating until 8 or 9. If I eat within a couple hours of waking up, I eat more all day long. I am seriously, unstoppably hungry by 10 if I eat breakfast by 6:30.
I used to worry about trying to get breakfast in earlier but now I do what works for my body. Later breakfast, normal lunch, snack, supper
If eating later works for you then stick to it! Whatever it takes to stay on track right? :)
i used to skip breakfast, and sometimes lunch, too. in fact, i skipped breakfast for all the years that i was gaining weight. eating breakfast (and being hungry) has been part of getting healthy and losing weight for me. feeling hungry is a signal that you're burning energy; it's a good thing (as is eating).
now, sometimes i have to have two breakfasts - a light one early, then a bigger one later in the morning.
waking up hungry is a sign that your sleep cycle is in sync with your metabolic cycle, and that your metabolism is working effectively. your body should demand food in the morning.
and by the way, this is totally consistent with weight research: people who don't eat breakfast are more likely to be overweight.
I understand the problem of hunger after eating breakfast. I feel at times like if my stomach is empty half and hour after breakfast but I have recognize that when I am getting near the time of my period I am hungry more than usual. I find that instead of having a larger caloric amount of food for dinner, I save it for my breakfast and it helps with the hunger pangs. I start with a large breakfast and then have smaller amounts of food through out the day. This seems to help me. BTW I am one of those who never had breakfast because I was never hungry and for that reason I gain an enormous amount of weight. I would end up at the end of the day gorging myself with so much food that I would feel like I was about to explode.
This happens to me if I start with too much sugar (natural or refined). Or if I have a soda throughout the day the rest of it I will be hungrier and want sweets.
If I start my day with low sugar foods then have a small piece of fruit at the end I'm fine!
The same thing also happened to me (no matter what I ate) when I first starting eating breakfast. After about a week of consistent breakfasting it quit!
And I have to make sure I start with enough calories to fuel my body for a couple of hours. If I'm just not hungry enough I double the calories in my morning snack to help.
Hope that helps!
I have experienced this too. Im not always hungry in the morning but still the first thing I do is to eat. Actually, eating and only eating activates my hunger. Im at my hungriest always during and a while after eating. I usually eat one portion of food, then stop, but Im never full. Then I wait for maybe 15 minutes, and the hunger is gone... And wont come back before I eat. It's very annoying, to eat when not hungry...
This is why I eat 2 breakfasts every morning and at least one of them is almost if not entirely protein. Eating grains in the morning makes me into a eating monster all day. When I eat eggs and turkey bacon or some lean ham for one of my breakfasts it really keeps me until lunch and I don't feel so desperate. That's just me, however. I'm sure some people find the opposite to be true.
etahbear, I'm the same way. I eat high-fiber oatmeal in the morning to get in some fiber and carbs, and then a couple of hours later when I'm at work I have a hard boiled egg for a mid-morning snack. The protein and fat in the egg keep me from starving until lunch time.
"appreciate that hungry feeling a little later because that's your metabolism waking up and busily burning off your fat stores.."
gi-jane - thanks for that explanation - that helps!
You're singing the song of my WEEKENDS!!!
If I eat breakfast right away - I overeat and by the time 12:30 rolls around, I'm pulling off my jeans and pulling on some elastic waistband pants. LMAO
What I've done that helps me is (and I'm sure I'll get some fingers wagging at me, but oh-well!) I get up and go to the gym first thing - get that out of the way. I normally get home from the gym between 9 and 10 am (leaving the house between 7 and 8 in the morning). I eat lunch, then a snack, then dinner, and another snack.
NOW - to those who will wagg their fingers at me in a "you should be ashamed of yourself" way - you need to know the REASON why I do this - I'm an emotional overeater. This includes boredom. I also tend to snack and nibble at night so I've found that delaying breakfast allows me to do the evening snacking I like and am used to - and not go over my allowance - as a matter of fact - this last weekend was the FIRST weekend that I didn't go over in calories and didn't have to pull on my sweatpants in about 4 months!!!
Have you tried just having a glass of milk when you first get up? It gives you some protein and enough calories to convince your metabolism to wake up, but it might not have the same hunger-triggering effect as it's not actually food.
I use to have this issue to, but I got some advice from a trainer that worked for me. She said I need to eat a breakfast with more fiber and protein, in order to feel fuller and longer. Here's an example.
* 6 Egg whites omelet, 1/2 cup veggies, (try no cheese), tobasco sauce for flavor
* I use non stick zero calorie Pam (I try not to use oil or butter)
* 1 cup FiberOne Honey Cluster cereal w/ 1/2 cup soy milk
* 1 apple or pear if need be
I used to be starving by 1030am, but ever since i ate more proteins (like egg whites) and changed my cereal to something with more fiber (FiberOne cereal), I feel fine until lunch now...all for around 300-400 calories. If I get some type of munchie at 1030 now, i eat a snack like FiberOne chewy bar or an apple or something. Try this out, it might help. Best of luck to you!
Im in the same boat..if i eat breaky then ill eat heaps all day!!!
i guess it depends on your self but i found that if i get up and exercise before anything else..even before work (in my case at 530am before beauty school) then it puts off my hunger, raised my metabolism and when i get home totally tired i dont ahve to exercise..and youll find after a good workout in the morning you hae more energy through the day plus youll be less hungry..
hope i helped
oh and in winter when its really cold, hoping on the tredmill soon as you wake warms you up and makes your skin glow all day...
This happens to me too. But from all my reading it's actually a really good thing. Making sure to eat breakfast within an hour of waking up gets your metabolism working for the rest of the day. If you don't it starts to slow down to conserve because it hasn't gotten any nutrients since the day before. So you may eat more throughout the day but you are probably burning more too because you are keeping your metabolism revved up and working.
it happens to me too..and i swear to myself right now that i'll either skip breakfast,or grab something RIGHT BEFORE going to school so that i won't overeat at breakfast..due to my heavy eating , i had gain 3 kg..now i have 5 more to lose and breakfast is a danger zone..and oh ya,if no school i must eat 1 hour after i wake
I don't eat breakfast except for black coffee, I haven't since I was a kid. I've never noticed any negative effects, not even when I was working in demolition(smashing walls with a sledgehammer all day). Very occasionally I'll have a bowl of cereal late morning but it's at least 4 hours after I get up, more of a lunch really.
i find if i eat a lot of simple carbs for breakfast i feel hungrier a lot sooner and will tend to eat more. try healthy proteins like low fat cheese, cottage cheese, egg whites, whole wheat/grain products, and some fruit.
good luck
Peanut butter is my friend. On weekdays, I eat whole grain cereal with cereal or milk for breakfast. I go to the office and about an hour later treat myself to a big spoonful of peanut butter. This takes care of the hungries until lunch time.
On weekends, I eat oatmeal (from steel-cut oats) and it tends to stick with me longer. I will still use the peanut butter to hold me until lunchtime, though, if I need to.
